Net Carbs?

Could someone possibly explain the science of net carbs to me? I know the math, subract the fibre. But why should I disregard all those carbs just because there's fibre in it? Also, what does "sugar alcohol" have to do with it?
Thanks
Thanks

I'm not entirely certain, but I think fiber is non-digestible complex carbohydrate. Since the body can't break it down, it's not counted in the total carbohydrates.
Also, here is a link that discusses sugar alcohols: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/understanding-carbohydrates/sugar-alcohols.html0 -
thank you!
