Am I using my HRM correctly?

Hello

Apologies for what may be a repetitive question.

I have an HRM which I use for running and kettle bell sessions. At the end of a session it gives me a "calorie burn" for the time I have been exercising. Am I correct in thinking that this also includes the amount of calories I would have burned just sitting around for that time?

I wore the HRM whilst just walking and sitting around the house and it comes to an average of 3.9 calories a min. So if I do a 30 minute session should I take 117 calories (3.9 * 30) off the total calories burnt to work out the additional calorie burn?

Thanks

Adam

Most HRMs do report gross calories burned ... resting metabolic plus exercise calories. They generally do not do well calculating resting calories (the formula is based on exercise not rest) nor do they do well for most lifting or intervals (again, the formula used). Using hypothetical numbers ... if your RMR is 2400 and you exercise for one hour, subtract 100 from the total reported to more closely approximate your net burn.
