Nicest Encouragement from a Stranger

I went to a restaurant for dinner. It's my favorite diner, they have very good pie, and on Wednesdays you can get a free slice. I forgot about the free pie until I got there, and then got a little irritated with it. I was in that diner quite regularly throughout the summer... and I wasn't dieting either. I could have really enjoyed a free slice of pie. But I was always there on Sundays. So I did not enjoy the fact that my first time going to that diner on Free Pie Wednesday was right after I restarted my diet.

Anyway, I stood strong: I ordered a meal that meets my diet plan, and said no to the pie. All three times it was offered to me.

Then I went to pay for my meal and the manager confirmed with me that I don't want a free slice of pie. I explained that I have recently started a new diet and he said, "well don't let me discourage you then". I was kind of amazed. I told him I really appreciate hearing that because most people would tell me to treat myself once in a while, or a little bit won't hurt. His response to that was: "Nope. You do what you gotta do".

I seriously cannot think of anything a stranger could say to me about my diet that is more encouraging and supportive than those words: Don't let me discourage you. Do what you gotta do.

I often see stories about people being "supportive" in all the wrong ways. But some people have it right. So don't let the others discourage you. Just keep doing what you gotta do.

Thanks for posting this story! His words are motivational for me. I can't say I've ever had a stranger's encouragement, but I've got friends who get quite excited about my successes and it always makes me feel much more determined to continue. How much better to be affirmed by a stranger!
