Total Gym vs free weights lifting

I have search old forums for total gym but really haven't found much other than how to log it. I am wondering how total gym compares to lifting. Would I be better off to do free weight lifting or does the total gym do the job for someone starting out. I do cardio 4 timer a week but really need to add some strength exercises. My sister has the total gym at her house but I also have some hand weights at my house. I do have acess to a the gym but not comfortable yet to do the weight section. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

I've never used a total gym but, in my opinion free weights are always the better option in that even with a fairly modest setup you can perform an incredibly wide range of exercises, including ones that work on smaller stabilizer muscles, and that you can make your workouts progressive (ie adding weight or adding reps as your fitness improves).
If you do decide to go to the gym consider spending a couple of sessions with a trainer (assuming that's a service they offer and that they have qualified staff on site) to develop a workout plan and to demonstrate the proper form for exercises.0 -
At this stage, do whatever one that you won't quit. You can always reevaluate 2-3 months from now0
