Getting off the YOYO!!

I've been using Myfitnesspal on and off for a few years, I seem to do great for a while then something happens in my life and i go off track again! I know it's just me making excuses..... no time, kids unwell, busy at work etc etc
Anyway, I'm back again to re-educate myself so that I can sustain this for life - not just a few months. I think i've realised that I need to make lifestyle changes rather than putting myself on a restrictive diet!
I would love any advice people have so that I do not fall into the same traps again.
Thanks

eat under maintenance, have a reasonable deficit goal, but don't freak out if you go a little over(especially if it's still under maintenance).
Try new things- what you did in the past didn't work for you then, prob won't now.
Set yourself up for success. Give yourself easy access to things that you want to eat more of.0 -
