Thinking about enjoying something from a delicious sushi restaurant for lunch? Well, maybe you should reconsider.

One Chinese man went to the wrong sushi restaurant on the wrong day, because what happened after one of his meals is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. He ordered some sashimi, and apparently, the restaurant didn't think to make sure there wasn't any tapeworm larvae in the raw fish. The x-ray you see below is the result of their questionable sushi:

After eating sashimi, this man went to his doctor complaining of an aching stomach and itching skin.

After being sent to the hospital, it was discovered that he had a parasitic infection...
    vzcuv8.png

...which he got from eating too much of the raw Japanese delicacy.

The man was okay, but it's probably safe to say that he'll be sticking to the chicken teriyaki next time he heads to a Japanese restaurant.

    ^^^^ how ridiculous....

Anyway, i usually look for sushi that has similar ingredients (cream cheese, spicy mayo, etc) if i can't find exactly what I'm looking for. It's never going to be exact, though, because the size and preparation of sushi rolls can vary. I usually just pick something close in terms of ingredients and just let it go.

This is one list. It is for rolls but you could divide by the number of pieces. It doesn't have specific rolls but types.

Ridiculous and scary. Some restaurants, such as buffets, may not properly store or flash freeze their sushi meats. This may not kill all living parasites in the sushi meat :)

I also just try to pick something of a similar size and with similar ingredients (especially when it comes to tempura or anything with spicy mayo, avocado, etc.)

... Yeh pretty sure that was in china, that place were they feed their own people poison and they use human fecal matter to grow veges... In this case its because the owner used wild boar meat. Some dodgy places in Japan also do this. Which is why i only buy well cooked meat in Asia. In most western countries food is regulated and many dishes are not raw. The raw dishes are prepaired correctly as to kill anything that may some how contaminate the food.

As for the question. It depends on the type of sushi you eat. Google types of sushi, figure out which you're most likely to eat and how much, then i'd check out calorie king as they are very specific types listed with the nutritional info. Then add the info to the MFP data base.

Becareful of the sauces they use as they can be high in calories. Same with some of the deep fried dishes.

    Enjoy!

You make very broad generalizations of western restaurants :) Corners can be cut regardless of geographical locations.

I hope you just never eat out, period. This is a potential problem with any single restaurant that serves anything. Pork can have worms, chicken can have salmonella, beef e. coli, vegetables can have any number of organisms from cross contamination. No one asked for fear mongering. Someone did ask for possible estimations of calorie counts in sushi.

To OP, if there isn't any nutrition info for the restaurant you're going to, I'd honestly just log your normal meals, and then either not log dinner or just write down what you order and then try and find estimated calorie info on that. One day eating above your needs won't derail your weight loss, so might as well just enjoy dinner with your wife and not fret about it too much.

I've had to do this a few times, I basically just eat a smaller serving and wait a while, if still hungry I'll have more, etc. Didn't stop me from losing weight!

The question was about calories, not food safety. I like sushi, too. You are smart to be checking calories beforehand. I was a little surprised how many calories can be in some.

Looking at the roll you were asking about, you could find a tempura shrimp roll with avocado, since tempura and the avocado will be the ingredients to most affect a calorie count. Enjoy your sushi!

Well said. Frankly, didn't even read the original post, but I came across a sweet article about sushi and parasites. Check this out.

I'm seeing many tin foil hats... The guy asked advice on calories in sushi... instead he gets lectured on how sushi may contain parasites and eating out will kill you! Welcome to the internet where everyone's a professional on everything but what you asked about. haha.

It could cover us all and keep us out of the rain!

I really wish the nearest sushi place here were within walking distance....

Anywhere is walking distance if you have enough time?

We don't walk when we go, but we could. I will suggest that next time.

    Try this website:

I find it pretty helpful. But you might have to do some compiling.

At least if you eat something riddled with alien larvae, it'll make you deathly ill afterwards and you'll lose weight, yay!! You can have all the delicious fun of eating all the sushi you want with a complimentary detox and cleanse afterwards. You can stay off from work binge watching box sets and vomiting. There is nothing about this plan that is bad.

I'd look at the website for a chain place (e.g. Yo Sushi! here in the UK) and use that as a general rule of thumb for same/similar items where you're going/have been.

I am currently unable to walk much because i injured my knee pretty badly and my doctor said absolutely no weight bearing on the knee if it's bent (and gave me a lovely immobilizer to wear, too!). (Injury also resulted in a lack of car, but i tried to walk everywhere anyway)

Alien larvae sound great! Do i get a complimentary alien bursting from my torso?

I've been using howdoyouroll.com/our-menu/ for sushi lately. If you click the nutrition tab on the left hand side it takes you down to a "build your own roll" machine that calculates calories and other nutritional info as you go. Obviously not going to be dead-bang accurate, but it might help.

If this is the place you usually go to and you usually order similar things there, your best bet is to get a takeout order one night of the things you usually get. Come home with that order, deconstruct one piece from each roll (safest to go with an end piece which is usually bigger than the middle pieces), and weigh the components individually. Take the weight of the parts of each roll and make a MFP recipe from it. That way, you will have a fairly exact tally to add by the piece the way that your specific restaurant makes its rolls.

Also, I am a dunker with soy sauce. Therefore, when I did this for myself, I took a second piece of each roll, weighed it whole, dunked it like I normally would, then weighed it again. That way, a semi-accurate representation of the soy sauce I'm consuming is included with each roll. I did this with each type because I like some to be saltier than others, but if you apply soy sauce the same to all of your sushi, you could just do it once and use that same number for every roll recipe you make.
