I told him to download myfitnesspal, he said 'why would I download an app when ive got a trainer' haha... He'll learn.
Trainers are really only educated in form and basic physio. They are not trained in nutrition. Heck, my friend became a trainer with a 7-week course and she believes cardio burns fat.
  • Is his trainer a female? Sounds like he's got a crush..

I told him that he wont be building muscle, he says he is. I've told him he's probably just made the muscle he's already got feel harder and as the fat disappears it makes it more visible.
He thinks hes built half a stone of muscle, which I find hard to believe.
Bodybuilding is not about health and wellness, so forget this guy. He's probably juicing roids and God only knows what else. To compete in that absurd sport, a guy must perform a load of unnatural, unhealthy actions. That's bodybuilding today.

Well he sounds a little daft. If that's the case, maybe he thinks he's eating 1000 but really eating at a surplus and possibly gaining muscle? Probably not.

How do you measure muscle to know whether you're gaining or losing it?

6'2 and eating only 1000 cals/day...???? Yikes. :o I am female, 5'7 and I would fall over eating that little. He is not going to put on muscle... he won't even maintain whatever muscle he has. And the whole break down your old muscle for new muscle, what is that all about? Oh man... your friend needs a new trainer for sure

The most accurate ways to measure body composition are hydrostatic and DEXA scans. But you can get a general knowledge if you use body fat calipers but understand you have to leave room for error. But for the most part, if you are losing weight, you are not gaining any new muscle. In fact, during weight loss, muscle loss and/or lean body mass will be lose.. the question is how much.
