Any other ladies get uterine cramps from intense exercise?

This is a strange thing that used to happen to me all the time-- biking, running, and hard cross-country skiing would cause me to get nasty period-like cramps, no matter what time of the month it was.

I haven't had this much for years, but it happened again recently on the first hour-long run I've taken in a while. It was cold outside-- I think cold does tend to trigger this for me, though only sometimes.

The funny thing is, last year I was getting terrible stitches in my side when I ran, and I learned breathing techniques that help prevent them and hardly get them anymore-- and now I get another sort of cramp from exercise! What a pain! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Anyway, have others experienced the non-period uterine cramps from exercise?

Yep, I do. I didn't have this problem before getting the Mirena though...it's one of the annoying side effects I deal with.

I get them too, and now I can't recall whether or not I used to get them before I got my Mirena put in. I don't think I did, so now I'm wondering if it's just a side effect.

Mirena might have an effect on your hydration.

Huh, interesting. I think I may sometimes be a little dehydrated, but not severely. I usually get a headache if I'm super dehydrated. I will keep this in mind, though.

How interesting that 2 of you who replied have an IUD! I do as well; the funny thing is, when I used to get awful cramps during exercise, it was before getting an IUD. Having one (a small copper one from Canada, not one used in the US) has amazingly reduced my cramps at all times.

    Hmmmm. . . .

  • If you are on a birth control like the ring or an IUD, that can definitely trigger that. I think it might be some bodily strain on skeletal muscle. If it hurts seriously, Id check with a doctor. If its just a little reoccurring pinch every once in a while, Id just shake it off. Our bodies are all so full of quirks.

Do they feel kind of like ovulation cramps (they're lower and and a little more dull, but sometimes can pack a punch). Does it happen every time you exercise? You could be ovulating or you could be getting a little cyst on your ovaries. I had that last week and exercising was so uncomfortable. Actually could not run-but I can run with cramps.
