And yes, I couldn’t help notice that my dog’s high-end kibble — like my paleo diet — is high in protein, grain-free and gluten-free. It’s made with “simple, holistic ingredients.” It’s fortified with omega-3 and omega-6 and antioxidants. The best part? Canidae is an expensive dog food, but at 85 cents a meal, it’s a lot cheaper than eating paleo.

I've volunteered for animal rescue organizations quite a bit. Some rescues offer discount or free pet food to senior citizens who adopt or foster cats/dogs that are "less desirable" (aka older/less pretty/too shy for families with kids). These programs have helped to reduce the number of pets euthanized due to overcrowding. Its a great program that gives senior citizens some companionship and gives pets loving homes.
Unfortunately, these same organizations are asked to check on the pets (and the owners) routinely because some senior citizens are so poor they eat the pet food. Volunteers who deliver the food and interact with the seniors in the program are asked to look for signs the seniors may be doing this and also to offer help from local food banks/meals on wheels etc if they think the elderly person may be eating the pet food to survive.

I went and read it. It was interesting. It probably is healthier to eat pricey dog food than cheap ramen every meal. It was probably cheaper and lazier than an extreme paleo diet. Eating high end dog food really sounds more expensive than just eating normal healthy human food. Waste of time and money. Also bland and gross.

buzz killed.
My thing, and this is coming from a place of privilege thanks to a great job, but I feel bad feeding my dog the high end dog food we do. I'd prefer to feed her raw, or mostly whole animals. It's just not realistic. I don't feel comfortable feeding my dog that stuff... I wonder if I'll feel a little more ok when I feed it to my mom.0 -

+1. What a sad existence. I always wonder if these people never had kids, if their kids are themselves poor and unable to help, or if their kids are just freaking terrible people.
EDIT: However, I'm not sure I'd consider Canidae "expensive". I mean, compared to brands that are full of fillers, sure. But compared to other filler-free varieties, it's darned cheap. When I first started buying it on Amazon, it was $0.93/lb for the largest bag. It's up to about $1.22/lb, but that's still not bad.
2nd EDIT: I'm guessing they are talking about wet dog food, though. Not sure about the prices on those.0 -

I have nothing but compassion for the seniors in the story you posted. For the woman in the story I linked to... I have compassion, but also some lulz.0 -
