Another beginner bike question

I have been reading other people's posts and replies concerning buying a bike, and I have a question as well. I always liked the hand-me-down I had as a kid that had been my mom's before then, so probably from 1960s? It was the old banana seat style bike. Does anyone know what, if any, of the more current models (and adult size, of course) might ride similarly? I don't know if it would have been a road bike, or what... so I am just hoping that with the bike enthusiasts, someone might be able to make a suggestion on what types of bikes I should start looking at, given that information.
