Vitamins????

I do want to start taking vitamins but don't know what to take. I have taken vitamins in the past and gotten sick off of them. I would take Women's once a day and it didn't matter how I took them I would feel sick for a couple of hours to half a day and I have even thrown them up. So I am so afraid to take vitamins. With that said when I was pregnant I could take Pre-natal vitamins and would feel just fine. Is it ok to still take pre-natal vitamins even thought I am not pregnant or is there something else better out there that won't make me sick?? Thanks for any advice.

Take a few days and keep track of your diet to see what, if anything you are short on. You can get what you need from diet instead of vitamins.
Personally I don't take vitamins. I can get my nutrients from food and with vitamins there is far too much crap in them and your body will not absorb it all.
If you do go the vitamin route, try taking it right before bed. When I did take vitamins no matter when I took them I would feel awful for hours afterwards with terrible stomach pains. I started taking them right before bed and never had an issue after that.0 -
Thank you, I think I will take your advice and see if I am missing vitamins I need and I think I am going to talk to my doctor and see what he says. I have heard about the no absorbing thing and I don't want that to be the case so probrably will just eat more vitamin enriched foods.0

If the multi-vitamin has iron in it then that can make you feel quesy. You should take them on a full stomach, straight after your biggest meal of the day.0

Yeah, whoa. If vitamins are making you sick that's definitely not something you want to trust us about even though I have an Internet PhD.0

Gummy vitamins are the way to go. I would recommend "Alive"0

I take the Centrum Silver Ultra Womens Multi Vitamins and I really like those. I noticed I do get a bit upset stomach if I take them on an empty stomach with just water or something but if I take them with food than they don't bug me at all.0

Gummy Vitamins - much easier to take than regular ones - and they taste yummy.0

Not sure what country you are in so might not be relevant but I find I throw up with some brands of multivitamins too. I am currently taking Swisse Women's Ultivitr, Cenovis Vitamin C and Zinc, Caltrate and Swissr Liquid Iron formula. I do not have reactions to any of these but I do to Cenovis once a day multivitamins. I think it!s a reaction to something they put in the binders. I also have the same reaction, unpredictably, to some foods like raw onions or milk/egg products like quiche.0

My ob/gyn kept me on pregnancy vitamins for a few years, during pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond. His advice was, if you think you might want to get pregnant in the upcoming year, keep on taking the prenatal vitamins.
Currently (as I have no wish to have another child in the near future) I take a Flintstone's vitamin. Actually, I usually only remember every third or fourth day as I'm dishing out the vitamin to my kids so I just pop one of theirs.0 -
Sorry, that should be Swisse Ultivite0

Thanks, I love flintstone vitamins so I might try that. My kids take gummy vitamins, I don't like gummy's all that much, so it probably wouldn't be good, but love flintstones0

Consider a liquid vitamin complex? You can then add it to OJ or whatever. You get much more benefit than from a pill.0

Oh that is a good idea0 -
Vitamins always make me sick when I take them in the morning on an empty stomach. I started taking them around an hour before bedtime, and I'd no longer get sick.
You can take prenatal vitamins as long as you'd like. The main difference between prenatal and regular vitamins is the prenatals have more folic acid which is more needed during pregnancy.0 -
Honestly I'd talk to your doctor about it, and perhaps even ask for some blood tests.
On a personal level though, I always used to get nauseated when taking vitamins before eating on an empty stomach. As far as I know you can take prenatal vitamins whether you're preggo or not; I hear they're great for hair and nail health as well.0
