Thoughts on my plan - too much?

Hi all,

I'd like some opinions on my fitness plan. Am I getting enough rest time (on paper)? I'm not very good at strength training on my own, so I joined a gym that does a lot of classes and I'm going to ones that primarily focus on strengthening (muscle exhaustion, boxing, etc).

I'm currently 5'2", 151lbs - female, eating 1200cals/day but eating back from exercise (not HRM, so only starting to eating half back). My main goal is to lose 25-30lbs.

Monday
- Cardio
- Fitness class

Tuesday
- T25
- Yoga
- Cardio (HIIT)

Wednesday
- T25
- Cardio
- Fitness class

Thursday
- T25
- Cardio (HIIT)
- Fitness Class

Friday
- T25
- Cardio
- Circuit training

Saturday
- T25 (double day)
- Cardio (HIIT)

Sunday
- "Rest day" but I work as a server, so I'm on my feet from 9am - 7pm
- Depending on how I feel when I get home, may do Stretch from T25

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Oh forgot to add, I'm currently in the first week of this plan, with slight tweaks due to other plans, but more or less the same - and so far so good (except today I'm feeling lazy!)

I see 1 day of strength training and 1 day of stretching/mobility work... so IMO it's not a very well balanced routine.

If you're really at 1200 cals, there's no reason for all that cardio if your goal is to simply lose weight. IMO, pick 1 thing per day and put all your energy into that. Do T25 one day, a fitness class the next, and HIIT after that. Personally, I'd only do 2 or 3 of those things anyways, but that's just me.

    But more to your question...
I think it's a bit much. But take it 1 day at a time, and if you start to feel trashed, give yourself a rest day. IMO, rest days should be taken as needed, not when planned.

It's basically a bunch of cardio. Sure, you can do it. Won't be efficient, or effective, but you can do it.

    I'd get bored.

Since you are in the first week of this program, how long do you plan on doing it? I see burn-out quickly developing with that amount of similar workouts and at that frequency.

Agreed. You don't want to get burned out. I do see a lot of cardio and a little added strength training from fitness classes. Cardio will burn calories while you are performing it but strength training will increase calorie burn at rest due to repair. Although I think fitness classes (that focus on core and strength training) are good as they give an all over body workout, they aren't the best for muscle gains but are great for toning and muscle definition. If you enjoy all the cardio, do it. If you enjoy the classes, do those. It won't necessarily hurt anything unless you don't give yourself enough recovery time.

I was just wondering how you fit so many exercises in in one day. You might start missing your social life pretty soon.

It's what happens after work, before sleep, but not during gym hours. ;)

I say foot problems and burnout are in your future if you continue with this plan. Program some rest days like Tuesday Thursday and Sunday. Unless your program before was as vigorous and as long as these you list above, you should start slow.

The life you had before family, career, and other commitments. That one.

There's something that happens in between those times?

Three cardio based classes in one day. Gonna be some rough days ahead and a lot of calories to eat back.

Haha re: social life. I'm currently between jobs and decided to focus on fitness while I have so much time during the day.

Thanks all for the feedback. Although I just wanted to point out though that the classes I go to are not so cardio based but using weights and muscle strengthening.

Using weights is not the same as strength training. I've never heard of a true strength training class. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but I'd be very skeptical...

There's a dude running a strongman class here. Kinda like CF I guess, but I'm not strong enough for it. Totally a one off though.

I'm sure they are out there, but I've got to believe they are exceptionally rare... and certainly not called "fitness classes."

We run an intro to oly lifting class here, but it's with PVC pipes and focuses on form/technique. There is no actual strength training that happens during the class.

I'd be interested to see how you are still doing on this program 3 or 4 weeks from now. Did you stay on it? Any injuries from over training? Boredom? Was the frequency to much? Boredom?

It would be different if she was talking crossfit but I don't think that's what she means. I've taken some core strengthening and strengthening classes but they are usually combined cardio/light weight toning classes. Depending upon your fitness level, it will make you stronger to an extent. I liked them because they can give you an all over body workout and I usually left feeling pumped and tight over my entire body. However, you will likely not gain very much muscle from these courses, a lot of definition and tone, but not very much muscle growth.

Haha - well good thing I asked for feedback before I did get 3-4 weeks in. I'll be rethinking the plan now.

Hmm, OK - maybe my classes aren't completely strength training. Did you take those classes in addition to your own strength training program?
