To Eat or Not To Eat...

I've heard conflicting information about whether or not I'm supposed to eat back my exercise calories. For instance, I burned 496 calories during my circuit training workout yesterday, but failed to eat back my calories. Should I have?

The general consensus is to eat back 3/4 or 1/2 of them, just to compensate for any over estimates.

Yes. If you are following the MFP method...yes or at least 50-75% of them.

This is a fairly frequently asked question around here, so there are a few threads that have been written to try and explain the way MFP is set up. I happen to prefer this one: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/818082/exercise-calories-again-wtf

That was BEYOND helpful! Thank you so much! I am using TDEE off of iifym.com to get my daily caloric intake so they've already figured in exercise into my calorie amount. So eating back those calories, is just overindulging. Thank you again for posting that link. I really, really appreciate it.

Wow. That was the quickest, most peacefully resolved question on the forums today.

Kruggeri, I try not to be difficult and show appreciation for any help I receive. I can't believe how unbelievably helpful the link diannathegeek posted was. I can't believe how out of control some of these posts get. It's just mind boggling.

Happy Friday everyone. Enjoy your day.

If you're trying to lose weight eat 1/2 of them. If you're maitaining all of them. Or that's at least what I'm doing.

Eat quality protein after a workout, I wouldn't get fixated on the calories

Since the OP has clarified that they're using the TDEE method to calculate their calories and that has exercise built in already, eating back half would likely not be helpful in this scenario.

So in essence, regardless if I exercise or not, if I'm aiming for 1573 calories, I should try to stick as closely to that as possible. Is that an accurate assumption?

Also, I'm a 34 year old female that is 5'7 and currently (well as of yesterday) weighs 132 lbs. Does 1573 seem like a good goal as far daily calorie intake goes?

What is your goal weight? How often do you exercise? What type of training are you doing?

I don't necessarily have a "goal" weight. I weighed 127 lbs. before I got pregnant with my daughter, so I wouldn't mind being that weight again, but it's more about how I feel and being comfortable wearing shorts/skirts/dresses in public. I have a circuit training center at my office that I go to 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes each time.

Yes, if you're doing the TDEE method and if your exercise is figured into your goal, you should aim to eat around 1573 every day.

You're only 5 pounds from 127 so as far as weight goes you're already there which would put you in maintenance. Yeah I think 1500-1600 cals per day seems fine. You could probably gradually go up to 1800.

Since you are at a good weight you will more then likely feel better eating close to maintenance as it is...

Thanks, J72FIT. It seems like the only days I go over my calorie intake goal, is when I have a soda with a meal, which is maybe 1 or 2 times a week. Depending on the week, sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm not a huge snacker, and I don't go crazy out of control with my portions so I think even if I'm not counting calories as strictly and precisely as I have been, I think I'll be alright.
