Motivation in the cold wet evenings

Hi all,

So now that winter has well and truly set in (at least here in Ireland), I'm finding that I'm snacking more in the evenings. Back in the sunny days I'd go for a run after work and revel in the glorious long evenings before coming home, cooking dinner and watching TV. Now I'm working out at home but finding that because I'm in the house more, I'm snacking more. Not unhealthy but just going over my calories which I don't want.

Any tips for keeping snacking under control?

Snack on lower calorie stuff like veggies, or break up your day into smaller meals so you're not hungry at odd times.

Could you try some herbal tea? I find on dark, chilly days I want to curl up and be cozy...and snack. Hot tea seems to help with some of the need for comfort.

Bundle yourself up and take a walk.
  • Uhhhg winter. It gets so dark so early here, there's already snow on the ground (harder to go running) and the cold just makes me want to eat and eat and eat.
I agree with hotcoffee though - herbal tea does wonders for a diet... I drink 3 or 4 cups a day sometimes....

Keep yourself OUT of the kitchen and start doing things during your evening that don't involve food: read, start a hobby, call friends, etc. Or, if you're watching TV do floor and body-weight exercises. Not all evening, of course, but just a few puts your mind back into the "fitness" mindset and should take your mind off of snacking. Oh, and stretching is good, too!

Sometimes I have to play mind games with myself - at times I will set a time for my snacks or something that I want to eat but don't need. I will also pre-log the calories, usually seeing those numbers helps me lose interest. Sometimes you have to try various methods before you figure out what works for you.

I am home a lot. Snacking is one of the reasons I gained weight. I keep track of the calories I eat throughout the day if I can. It helps me to realize it is time to stop when I see the numbers. Also, as others mentioned you could eat lower calorie snacks. Maybe you could portion out the snacks? If you can get out that would be good, too. There are indoor places here I could go and walk, but it isn't like running.

i would take half the time I am spending snacking and put that into learning to cook/bake/make new snacks that I can eat through the winter and not feel guilty :D

Comfort-eat on the good stuff-- carrots, peppers, tomatoes, grapes, satsumas...
Also PEARS. Pears are great and they are a wintery fruit (poached pears??) so they can be a good thing to appreciate about winter (they're few and far between. Gotta celebrate every little one haha)

It may sound crazy but I go night hiking with a headlamp. On a bike trail or forest, with either my husband or a hiking group I joined. And I try to snack on fruit or veggies with hummus dip.
