Lots to lose- scared and excited

Hey everyone-

My name is Sarah and I am 27 and a new mom. I have a wonderful son Maddox, who was born in September. I have always been overweight my whole life and recently have had health complications and realize as I look at my son that I need to lose half myself! I am starting out at almost 300 lbs (291) and I have never ever in my life admitted to anyone how much I weigh!

While admitting that makes me feel relieved it also brings sadness to me. I want to do this but more than anything I need to do this. I have dieted on and off my whole life and am finally realizng that it cannot be a diet when I am this heavy, it has to be a lifestyle change!

I am 10 days into using MFP and lost 5 lbs the first week. I know this will not be typical but it gave me a great sense of pride to know that I have stuck to it.

I just wanted to share my story and have read a lot of success stories and have been filled with such inspiration. I am hoping that this will finally stick and I can and will lose weight!

Thanks for reading!

    Hi Sarah,

Seriously - keep it as simple as possible. Each day there is a calorie deficit (diet & exercise) you are one day closer to your goal weight. I was an athlete my whole life. After an injury and being lazy, I put on 45 lbs. I thought I could just do what I did when I was younger, two weeks of salad and exercise, it all goes away.

I have had to make the lifestyle change as well. Do it one step at at time...if you do it all at once, it will be completely overwhelming. Add me as a friend...Good luck!

It is totally doable! You are thinking right that it is a lifestyle change and not a diet you need. I've known that for years for myself, but I still just tried to diet or go too extreme, so I would have short-term success here and there, but overall, since hitting college and now onwards into my early 40s, I've just gotten fatter and fatter. We started from the same spot! I was at 291 3 months ago. MFP is definitely helping -- log religiously and be honest with yourself. Don't go so overboard it is unsustainable in the long-term. Look at this as a tool to help you regulate and get healthier and don't beat yourself up if it doesn't melt off instantly. It's infinitely easier to put it on then it is to take it off and keep it off. You can do this!
