Insanity/weight loss/muscle gain/deficit

Hi,
I'm confused about a few things. I started running about a year ago, and I lost about a stone in a short space of time, from 66kg to 58/9kg. I wanted to get down to 55/6 but have been on a plateau ever since. I joined the gym in march with some success, but never lost the final bit of weight (I go between 1 and 5 times a week, depending on work). I started insanity a few weeks ago (had a false start and had to start agian, so am now beginning the third week but did the first week and a half twice). I have gained between 1 and 2 kgs but didn't mind because I though it must be muscle, I definitely feel stonger and am starting to see more ab definition. But today I read that you can't gain muscle while in a deficit. I don't always stick within my calories (for one thing because they feel ridiculously low), but am still eating less than I was a year ago and don't often go over 1400 net.
So what is happening and why am I gaining!?!
I have been going to the gym twice a week while doing insanity and just doing strength exercises with no cardio, because I think I get enough cardio from insanity. is this a bad thing to do? Am I even meant to be eating in a deficit while doing insanity?
