WARNING: Chipotle Food is very high in Sodium

I went to chipotle website just now because they have a calorie calculator for their menu there. A simple vegetarian bowl (brown rice, pinto beans, black beans, tomato salsa, guac and corn salsa) adds up 1750 mg of Sodium. This is 75% of US recommendation for whole day. If you take meat, it will be even more. If you have any disease condition (like BP), then US recommendation drops to 1500mg/day. Chipotle is not as healthy as i thought it was. I have sent a request to them, through their website, to drop the sodium levels in their restaurant. I urge you to do the same, in case you are eating there. Perhaps they will listen to many of us complaining at the same time.

I have found this to be true with any restaurant food.0

I don't think I've ever eaten out and been able to order something with low sodium. It's pretty standard for restaurant food to be loaded with it.0
-
Naw, it's not sodium heavy. In fact, it's under salted.0
-
Of course it is...0

My thoughts on this topic is just don't eat there if you object to their food. They may claim to use fresh ingredients, but I've never heard them promise low sodium food, nor are they required to do so. Panerea Bread is another one. Some of their sandwiches exceed 2500 mg of sodium. And this is true of most restaurants out there. It just becomes a matter of personal responsibility. We decide if we do or do not want to frequent these restaurants. I'm just happy that so many restaurants are posting their nutritional info now. I also often find that the serving sizes are so large, I wind up making 2 meals out of it anyway.0

Almost all restaurant and fast food is loaded with sodium.
You can write letters, but most people on our continent are accustomed to a lot of salt. It sells. So, it's unlikely that it's going away soon.
I wish you well. I'd love it if there was less salt in everything!0 -
Sodium is really only going to be an issue with people who have high blood pressure or hypertension. They shouldn't exceed. For general public, work out and sweat some. You body will be a salt lick.

Sodium is only an issue for people who have salt-sensitive hypertension, which is a relatively small percentage of those who have hypertension. It's not really that big of a deal. As has previously been said, all restaurant food (not just fast food) is like this, so this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention.0

Yeah. I kind of feel like if they decide to lower their sodium, their food will taste crappy and then no one will eat there I love me some chipotle though... Mmmmm0 -

I don't believe it is standard to get two servings of beans. Yes, you can get two, but that's going to significantly increase the calories and sodium in the bowl.
Chipotle is a lunch or dinner food. Getting 75% of the US recommendation in one meal is not actually a problem. My breakfast (fruit) has 0 sodium. My lunch is often in the 500-1000 mg range, leaving me 1,300-1800 mg-ish for dinner.
The highest sodium menu items are as follows, with mg sodium in parenthesis: Tortilla (690), Sofritas (555), Barbacoa (530) Carnitas (500) Tomato Salsa (500) Red Tomatillo Salsa (500).
Higher Sodium_______________Lower Sodium
White Rice (375)______________Brown Rice (165)
Pinto Beans (300)_____________Black Beans (260)
Tomato Salsa (500)___________Green Tomatillo Salsa (250)
Those swaps save you 500 mg of sodium.

First, that is NOT a vegetarian bowl. If you are a vegetarian- the pinto beans are not vegetarian.
Second, I don't believe it is standard to get two servings of beans. Yes, you can get two, but that's going to significantly increase the calories and sodium in the bowl.

Yes, most fast food is ridiculously high in sodium. This is one of the great things about logging with MFP: you get to see these things. While sodium isn't usually an issue, you can often "see it" on the scale. That's a good thing about weighing. You see the numbers. Now you can see that you didn't gain weight the day after eating at Chipotle, you just had a sodium bomb. It's all good info.0

I am mistaken. Sorry. They used to be made with pork. Google tells me that they phased the pork out in 2013. I think I've been to Chipotle 2X this year, so that's probably why I missed that. I'm very excited to hear that they are now vegetarian. Thanks for pointing it out. I edited my original post to reflect that.0 -
And this changes nothing for my plan to grab Chipotle for lunch after my Thursday gym session...0

I love Chipotle, even though it makes me want to drink a gallon of water afterwards...0

Stop the presses! Breaking news! Fast food is salty!!!! OH NOEZ!!!!!0

news alert bagels are high in carbs...-1

I love Chipotle and I love to eat out. The sodium will never stop me. Although, I do make a pretty descent burrito bowl at home that I like better than Chipotle. I love to cook so I try and create my own versions of the restaurant food at home. So maybe you can try doing that as well if the sodium is an issue for you.0

Pretty much all restaurant food is very high in sodium.0

Mmmm, Chipotle.
If you would like to write a letter, by all means. But don't think they're going to change the food that's making them so much money.0 -
That picture is pretty awesome.
That's how I felt the first time I had a mission style burrito.0 -
I just choked.
If you're concerned about salt, cook things yourself - it's the only way to have control over the sodium levels.
And now I want Chipotle chicken soft tacos.
