Just joined, looking to be consistent on MFP and Competition question

Hi,
Just want to send encouragement to anyone reading this in their own goals. I need to lose about 80 lbs, so for me this should take most of a year or more. I have been obese for couple of decades now really, but think that resolving this will just take consistent attention and the right attitude and eventually I'll get these goals. Those are the big hurdles, laziness(mental) and accountability, so I am grateful other issues, physical, medical, cravings, lack of exercise, etc. don't seem to be major problems. So I'm expecting that tracking meals done consistently will do the trick. I have a long way and time to go, but look forward even to the little improvements that you feel along with the big ones on the scale or measurements. I wish you all well in your goals too.

Also, I'm sort of competitive and thought about seeing if anybody wants to set up a race to small or intermediate goals, but that's probably not an original thought and might have come up on this site before.
If it has, instead I'll ask if races or competition to lose some number of pounds, etc. is a successful time-tested approach here on MFP, or if it's the wrong mental approach to take to a long term important challenge. Are there reasons why this has or has not succeeded in the long term for people who tried it? Has anyone hit their goals and in the course of doing that had some member competitions along the way that were effective?

Hi! I've been on here 69 days so far. I've lost a total of 23lbs, 16 of those since joining here at mfp. I'm 6 lbs away from my goal and 11 lbs away from being the smallest I've been since I hit puberty. the first couple weeks I learned alot just from honestly logging what I was eating. I slowly made substitutions here and there. Then after the first few weeks started adding more veggies / fruits, started cutting down a bit on sugar. Now I'm eating alot healthier, I no longer feel hungry all the time and I've had crazy good results, not just with my outward appearance but with the way I feel. I had been on nexium for gerd for 6 years. I no longer need it because I no longer have heartburn. Other tummy issues have disappeared. My female issues have gotten a million times better. I'm happier. I've dieted off and on my entire adult life and never had results like this that I really feel are maintainable. You can do it! There are lots of groups / competitions out there if you browse the forums. But it definitely should be a long term mindset and a slow and steady wins the race mentality.

Thank you for your story, and definitely congrats on your great results and efforts. 69 days and 23 lbs is great. Getting rid of gerd and improving other issues sounds equally cool. Just 2 1/2 months made a big difference for you, and I hope if I do this, for me too. I am going to go count 69 days from now and see if I can hit 13 lbs minimum by then. That seems slow and steady. Great job and keep at those last 6 lbs.
