Hello my MFP'ers,
Was diagnosed with gout yesterday and am in alot of pain. Dr. gave me a prednisone taper. But other than that what foods can you have that won't create a build up of uric acid in the system? Thanks

You need to get a referral from your doctor to see an experienced qualified dietitian.0

Errr, because the links above don't replace the advice from an experienced medical professional.0 -
Dr. didn't tell me anything. I've been working with a dietician the last 2 months on trying to drop some pounds but she doesn't really tell me anything either and that's after sending her my food diary for the last month. Her response was it looks good, your eating a good balance of proteins, fruits and vegis and good fats. Sent her another email this morning in hopes of getting some tips. to be honest i've seen 3 dieticians over the last 5 years and none of them have really done or said anything that I didn't already know. Just the basic college course info passed on and on.

My boyfriend gets gout, it's awful. I'm pretty sure his excessive beer consumption is to blame. It is also genetic. I'd look at the lists of foods above and see if there is anything that you eat/drink regularly on there. Try to eliminate it for awhile and see if it stops flare ups.0

Henry the eighth had the gout, from too much wine and rich foods. Stick with fruit and veggies......I have had two attacks in my big toe same foot. and yes it is very painful. good luck0

Have you made your feelings known to them? Have you gone to the head of the department and complain? Seriously, if you are not getting the service you need then you need to speak up.0

Sorry man. Gout sucks. I started getting gout attacks a couple years ago, and recently they got more frequent so I made some big changes to try to get rid of it.
You definitely should read the relevant info on foods to avoid, but I think you'll find that some are more important than others - and which those are varies by person. Of course, how much you're willing to give up depends on how frequent and severe you're attacks are. Mine were bad enough that I took two big steps. First, I cut out all alcohol (or 99% of it anyway - on special occasions I've had a drink). They say beer is particularly bad, but I found that all alcohol was triggering attacks. Second, I drastically reduced my meat intake. I only eat meat at (at most) one meal a day now.
There is medication you can take to reduce your chronic uric acid levels, but your doc probably won't put you on it unless you're getting frequent attacks.0 -
I'm not a doctor, but my husband had that and they told him to cut down on red meats and soda pop (he drank a lot of dr. pepper). Some doctors won't tell you what to do diet-wise, they would rather write you a prescription. Keep you coming back, ya know?!0

Yes gout is genetic but it also has a food component. Limit red meats in general and any organ meats specifically.
I had a gout attack in my early 20's as a woman who doesn't eat excessive red meats and doesn't eat organ meats at all. If it's genetic there may or may not be much you can do food wise to prevent it.0 -
Ziggy, it's awesome you were able to make the changes to control it without meds! My brother is a sufferer and tried to control it with diet, but ultimately, the changes he could sustain didn't reduce pain enough. He is a super-active in-shape guy, but also a beer drinker (doesn't touch any other kind of alcohol). He takes maintenance meds and wonders about the long term side effects. Good luck, OP.0

My husband has gout and his father does, too. My husband has been able to control his simply by figuring out which foods triggers it for him. His father is on medication for it. Everyone is different.
OP, I'd start by doing a bunch of research and see which foods are the most common triggers. A few are listed here but for my husband it's shellfish. He can no longer eat shrimp, crab, lobster, etc. in any quantity or he's in pain the next day. It'd be a good idea to avoid all of the known triggers for awhile until you're feeling better. Then you can try them one by one, if you want, to see which ones cause problems and which ones don't. It's important to isolate them and space out your experiments if you really want to make that determination, though.
Cherry juice helps when my husband has an attack. The brand Juicy Juice has a 100% cherry juice version that I buy him at the local grocery store when he needs it.0 -
Thank you all for posting to this topic. Am on day 3 of the prednisone taper and pain is slowly subsiding. For the people who talked about Beer/Wine etc. I gave that all up once my soon to 5 year old son was born. I have maybe 6 beers a year and only drink wine on my wife and I anniversary so I know that's not what is triggering it. I was eating about 15 ounces of meet and fish a day as I was following the Body for Life plan by Bill Phillips which calls for 6 small meals a day. Each meal consists of a portion of protein a portion carbs and at 2 of the meals vegi's.
I received an email back from the dietitian and she provided me with 2 generic lists and that was it.
Gout does not run in my family. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes does, but not Gout. Think i'll stick with Gout on that list.
Somebody I know mentioned they use a supplement called Al-alpha which you can get from Wal.Mart that helps him when he starts to feel a flare.
I'll drop my protein intake and increase the fruits and vegi's and see what happens. Once again I would like to thank everyone who responded to my post.0
