oh my god don't you just hate the feeling of going round in circles that's all I seem to be doing lately! beginning of the month doing good going to the gym regular and eating really healthy, end of the month eating crap no gym and being a total slob! if anyone has any good ideas that will help me keep my motivation or if anyone has good tips! please add me :smiley: i need help aha!

    sign up for some kind of race/run/challenge so you'll have something to work toward. You can't slack when you've got goals to acheive.

    Choose one thing each month to work on.
    -Eat within your cals first month. Make it a habit!
    -Add the gym second month. Make it a habit!
    -Adjust what you are eating to be more healthy third month. Make it a habit!
    -So on....

    1.) stop thinking that motivation drives you.
    2.) stop thinking that it's a wagon that you can climb on and off- or fall into or out of.
    3.) Set long term goals- and plan intermediate steps.
    4.) Start small.
    5.) Never use a failure as an excuse to stop doing what you're doing.
    6.) Don't let your body boss you around. It's your body- make it your *kitten*.

    Lack of commitment. A person committed to a goal will do what it takes to achieve it. Obstacles and setbacks don't deter them.
    So you have a "desire" to do something, but are lacking the commitment to complete it. And that's more about how you feel about it rather than motivation. Do you "kinda" want it or do you "really" want it? From the sounds of it you just kinda want it. Till you really want it, you'll continue doing the same thing.

    maybe try and get a diet/exercise buddy that you have to be accountable with. when i used to live at home, my mom and i would get started on a bunch of things together like detoxes and workouts and we usually lasted a good couple of months. i know it's not forever but it's a longer time than i would have lasted on my own.

    It's about habits. You need to make the things you're doing a habit and then they become automatic. The suggestion to add one new thing each month is a really good one. I think one of the best ways to make the sort of changes we need to make to stay healthy is to take babysteps. Start out just logging for awhile, don't even change the way you eat. After a week or so take a good hard look at what you've been eating and look for things that you are eating or drinking that make a big impact on your calorie totals each day. That 2:00pm Coca Cola and Snickers bar every day that equals 500 calories? Exchange it for a glass of iced water with a lemon wedge, or even a Diet Coke, and an apple and that's almost a pound per week difference. A few weeks later, add a 10 minute walk break at lunch. Little things can add up to make big changes.

    You don't need to eat 1200 calories of rabbit food and kill yourself at the gym to lose weight. Trying to change everything about your life all at once because you decide to "lose weight and get healthy" leads most people to feel overwhelmed and frustrated.

    what ninerbuff said really. When push comes to shove you either want to lose weight and can take the consequences or you wnat to do soemthing else more. If you cnat reach the targets you set, then its a sign either your plan is poor/ too severe, you are executing it poorly.

    You have to tackle your mentality that happens to you when you start doing things that move you further away than towards target. You know when those moments are. get it under control.

    I would look at your plan again and start setting yourself realistic targets to aim for. One day and one week at a time. Just focus.

    I hope that you don't mind, but I went back through your food and exercise diary a bit. In the month of October especially you seem to be spending an hour or so at the gym doing cardio but you rarely eat any of those calories back. You have days well below your goal, some days even below 1000 calories. At least one day that I saw you have logged about 800 calories and burned about 800 calories.

    I would fall off that wagon too! I think that you might consider whether or not your goals are too aggressive for you to stick to. A lot of people try to do too much in the beginning and then blame themselves when they can't stick to it. You might do better with a slower, more achievable goal.

    This for sure. My main motivation for losing weight is I want to run a half-marathon in the Spring. If I didn't have that clearly defined goal ahead of me, I might not have lost the 35lbs I've lost so far. And although I hate lifting, it supports the ultimate goal of running that 3.1 mile course. So I lift, and I keep close tabs on my food. I have to if I want to run.

    So...like amgreenwell said, set a goal of something you want to DO as a result of the weight loss and fitness. Then keep your eyes on the prize.

    I don't think it's idealistic at all. Goals are achieved through determination and commitment in spite of whatever life throws at you.

    I want a better job with more money. Is that idealistic too?

    If i want it, then I will work for it and make it happen. I won't let life get in the way.

    Yes. Some people might call it "willpower" but it really comes down to wanting it enough that you're willing to do what it takes to make it happen.

    There are millions of people out there wanting to lose weight and wishing they could but never getting beyond that point. It takes that little mind switch to make it important enough that we're willing to put in the effort and make the changes necessary.

    That's a cop out. Everybody everywhere has roadblocks and detours. What you do with that sets the determined apart from everyone else.

    Making goals:

    1) set an achievable goal
    2) have a way to mark your progress numerically (weight, size, measurements, how much you can lift/run)
    3) break the goal up into smaller bits
    4) log your progress at achieving the smaller bits numerically (see #2)
    5) keep going
  • My husband and I decided that it was not worth it to get gym memberships, because it seemed too easy to fall off the band wagon. Instead we bought an elliptical and some light weights, in addition to renting work out videos from the library. Now, regardless of what's going on, we rarely have an excuse to prevent us from making time to get in a workout.
