An interesting article on chain restaurants serving up seemly healthy choices that will derail your success.

Those calorie counts include the entire packet of dressing, which is usually a ridiculously huge portion.

it's a surprise that salads laden with fried chicken, cheeses, cream/oil dressings, bacon, nuts, and other assorted toppings are high in calories?
  • Shocking indeed. Thankfully I have none of those places near me at all so I'd never be fooled by those salads. But they don't particularly look too "salady" to start with. Too much meat and cheese on them to be a salad-salad, if that makes sense.

and yet, i've seen people dump the whole dressing on, and ask for extra. i often wonder why they bother with the salad, they should just get a straw for the dressing.

Can I get you a small side of lettuce with your fried chicken & dressing salad?

This. If it's got fried chicken on it, it's hardly a salad.

Well, YEAH. Cheese, bacon bits, fried chicken, ranch dressings, sour cream, nuts are all fatty, salty, crispy YUMMY. These places stay in business by offering instant gratification to the senses. That comes with calories. I only had the Boston Pizza (I don't know if you have this chain in the US) salad once and I learned my lesson.

What I DON'T GET and I hope the chains are listening, is WHY BOTHER candy-coating the pecans? They have plenty enough goodness all on their own.

I'm a salad fan in general. I don't mind a high calorie salad. My local corner diner sells a pretty incredible, hefty chicken ceasar. What packs the caloric wallop is the creamy ceasar dressing, which tastes amazing. I don't order that salad as a "healthier" option, I order it because it's damn good.

My issue is with people who think anything labeled "salad" automatically means "lower calorie" or that they're being good. Come on now.
  • You may as well order a double cheeseburger, fries, and a cheesecake. Geez.. make it worth your while.
