Treadmills and GPS Watches

I do all of my running on a treadmill due to recurring hip injuries that running outside tends to aggravate. I have a Nike+ watch with the shoe pod sensor that I use sometimes while I'm on the TM. If I run at a 10 minute pace on the TM, my watch sometimes shows me running a 9'20" pace. Which one do you think is more accurate, the TM or the watch and shoe pod sensor?

Either could be more accurate. Or they could both be off. The accurate one is the one which was correctly calibrated. Unless you've calibrated either one, you have no idea how accurate each one.

Depends on if the shoe pod is calibrated. Need to find a measured distance, like a track, and use that to calibrate the pod.
  • I have a Garmin Forerunner 15 that I pair with a Garmin Footpod. I have no idea if the Nike works the same, but with the Garmin, every time you run outside, it uses the GPS satellite to determine your speed and distance and uses that data to calibrate the footpod. My treadmill is soooooo off what my watch / footpod tells me, but I'll take them as accurate over my treadmill any day!

If properly calibrated and good belt, the treadmill will be more accurate. Strides vary on speed, footpod measurements do not.
