    Makes you retain water.
    Yes.

Just drink more fluids to alleviate this. And don't bother weighing yourself for about 2-3 days after eating a high sodium meal.

The FDA recommended daily allowance is 2300 mg or less per day.

MFP sets its limit at 2300, but most doctors (and all cardiologists, I think) are now saying 1500.

If you have too much, your body will fight it and extra water is part of that. When the sodium levels normalize, the water drops off. The sodium weight gained is from the extra water. You aren't gaining fat. :)

This. I stay under the 2,300 and I'm okay. One meal out at Buffalo Wild Wings and it's 2 or 3 days of bloating for me. :grumble:

1500 mg of sodium equals about 3/4 teaspoons or 3.75 grams of salt per day, while 2300 mg equals about one teaspoon and 6 grams of salt per day. Most people today are eating much more than that. The average intake of sodium is about 3400 mg.

Ok you all were using some equations of salt that I had to google to find out what it is!!

The thing with sodium isn't the amount you shake from your salt shaker. It's the amount added into processed foods.

Ask your doctor how much sodium is right for you, then read labels and weigh the food to get a good idea how much you're getting. :)

The problem is, we don't know yet. Excessive or low sodium intake is associated with increased mortality.
