Serious lack of motivation

First of all I'm 31 years, nearly 32, I'm 5' 7", 165 lbs, average body I'd say. For a while now I've been trying to motivate myself to get to the gym regularly, I want to get into shape, feel healthier, look healthier, look fit. My weight isn't the issue, it's how that weight is distributed. I want to put on some muscle, but it's really difficult, for many different reasons. The biggest issue I have right now when I'm actually at the gym is that I have no idea what I'm doing or what I should be doing. I've considered scheduling a trainer session but frankly I just don't make enough money to fit that into my budget.

On top of that, I seriously lack the mental motivation, one day I'm like "alright I can do this" and the next day I'm making some sort of excuse. I don't have a consistent 'diet', primarily because frankly, I don't make enough money to keep a good level of healthy food in the house (and when I do, it doesn't last long enough for me to actually be able to eat any of it because we've got too many other people in the house).

I don't know how to create a logical, affordable meal plan to help accomplish my goals, I don't know what I should be doing in terms of a work out, and frankly, I don't know where to find the motivation, I don't know how to motivate myself to actually do it.

I realize that there's going to be some people who say "if you really wanted to do it, you would. Just suck it up and get it done", etc. and you're not wrong. But that, really isn't going to help me get into the mental state of actually being able to focus on what I want to accomplish.

    Hi there,

If money is tight I would personally ditch the gym and use the money on buying healthier foods - you DO NOT need to go to a gym to get in to shape. There are many sites that have workouts that require no equipment - these are ideal for a beginner. Check out Nerdfitness or Fleetly.

    Some tips for motivation:
    Workout with a friend
Keep a workout schedule and tick off when you complete as workout. Reward yourself if you complete the schedule.
Start smaller and work up e.g. aim to do one run a week, build up to 2 etc etc
Join a social fitness site such as Fleetly, Fitocracy, Runkeeper
