Ok so ive lost about 55 pounds and ive been dieting since June I believe, I cut out alot of sugar from my diet but every now and then I have a cheat day and each time I do that and indulge in something sugary like ice cream, ill wake up in the middle of the night and will not be able to go back to sleep. Is this because my body is not used to having sugar? The next day I feel like utter crap im sure because of the lack of sleep but also from the sugar maybe?

Yeah waking up in the middle of the night could very well be due to your change in blood sugar. Its not so much because of your restriction from sugar but because of the lack of sugar in the rest of your day, the sugary food cause more of an insulin spike. But I do also feel like crap the day after a very sugary day. What you are experiencing there wont go away because that is how your body will respond to unhealthy foods, you just arent used to it anymore like you used to be.

why is sugar "unhealthy" it is just something that your body uses for energy…

OP - you can eat sugar, be in a deficit, and lose weight. It may help you with some of the issues you appear to be having.

Is it different if you eat the ice cream in the morning instead of at night?

I had panettone and a chocolate truffle last night and I slept fine, and felt fine the next day. It was also delicious!

No, it's not because of the sugar. At least not directly. It could be that the sugar is indirectly waking you with some misguided feelings of guilt or shame at having "cheated." That's a pretty negative term, and shouldn't be used in conjunction with food. You're a grownup, making a grownup choice to eat what you want. You're not cheating.

I don't sleep as well if I eat a lot of carbs in the evening. Probably a scientific/nutritional reason for that, but I don't know what it is and it doesn't really matter why...it just is what it is.

I won't weigh in on the overall argument of whether sugar is generally healthy or unhealthy but for some of us who are insulin resistant, intolerant, diabetic, pre-diabetic, etc it's not good.

I've had to cut refined sugar out of my diet as much as possible, because after suffering with chronic insomnia for 15 years I discovered quite randomly & by accident that it seemed to be triggered by sugar intake. It's been 6 months since I stumbled upon this realisation, and I've been sleeping like a regular person ever since! :)

I'm not saying this is the same for everyone, and I don't personally believe that sugar is bad or to be avoided unless you have a specific need to, but for me it definitely isn't a good thing. I do *really* miss cake! :(

Anytime you eat something out of the ordinary it can affect you. How much ice cream are you eating on your cheat days? Is ice cream the only thing you eat on cheat days and not on a regular basis? How often are your cheat days? Is sleeplessness the only symptom? No one here can really answer your question with the little bit of information you've given.
