Don't you burn calories with strength exercises?

When I enter in things like bikram yoga, it doesn't show any calories being burned.

I feel like I am definitely burning something! Also, I'm sure that weight lifting, doing push ups, sit ups, etc burns calories. Why doesn't MFP count them?

    Look them up as Calisthenetics - you can choose vigorous effort or light/moderate and that will give you calorie burns...not sure about the yoga!

    Wondered a lot about this too, Starry. To the point that now, when I did my lifting that lasts about 45minutes (pause between sets is 2 minutes, beeps), I code it into MFP as cardio 'general aerobics' 45 minutes! You bet it burns Kcals!!!

    Yoga is in there.
    Calisthenics are in there.
    Weights are a bit more controversial as its difficult to calculate.
    I dont bother entering anything for resistance training. Id be more concerned about overestimations. You arent missing out because you havent entered them into the database, your body knows what you have done.

    I click "stretching, hatha yoga" under cardio and it shows calories burned. Try that.

    I just enter calories manually for these... The burns are lower than for cardio, but the eventual benefits are of lower BF% are great. Bikram I usually give myself 250-350 for a 90min class... Weight lifting I go with 3 cals per minute... That's just me... If I find I'm still famished I will go over a bit, but keep the overage on the high protein side, on these days as the estimate is conservative...

    You need to enter calorie burns under the Cardiovascular section. The Strength training section is just to record reps, weights, etc.

    Don't go overboard on the calorie allotment and keep in mind that MFP's numbers are generally inflated; it has no idea how much time you spent recovering after a set or how hard you went at it. I generally enter a 100 calorie burn for an hour of strength training. Overestimating your calorie burn will only slow down your weight loss and hurt you in the long run.

    Counting calories burned during weightlifting is a controversial subject. I suppose it depends on what you're doing & how long your rest is between sets.

    When I teach Jazzercise I count the weightlifting portion in my total amount of exercise time. Based on my Polar, the calorie estimation in MFP is WAY too low for Jazzercise so I use their burn rate, eat the calories if I feel like it & don't if I'm not that hungry. Considering the type/quantity of movements we do, I use pretty heavy weights & I know my heart rate stays up.

    I do not count my regular weightlifting. It's a lot slower & more deliberate than what I do during class. I don't wear my Polar & see that as body reshaping time, not fat burning time.

    I use endomondo to calculate my burn doing strenght training / weight lifting. I have synced endomondo with MFP. Works like a charm. :)

    Thanks, everyone! I'm still pretty new to tracking everything correctly and for some reason, the first few times that I looked up yoga (maybe on my phone)? It didn't come up with anything. I see it now.

    the formula that underlies the calculations of calorie burn on HRMs is for steady-state cardio, not sure what Jazzercise is and what the weightlifting portion constitutes, but for straight weight work the HRM does not give the correct calorie burn so I'd avoid eating all that you're given

    although tbh I do similar with my gym sessions and calories - I'm just aware I shouldn't really eat them all back

    Starry, I had the same problem with my workout routine at the gym. I changed up how i lifted and did cardio in between sets and used "Circuit training" as what i use under the cardio section of MFP and that seems to accurately track what i do. sometimes you have to kind of shoehorn your workout into whats closest to it in the cardio section and just make sure what its giving you for a calorie burn seems reasonable.     P.S if you get one of the fitness trackers that combine use with a heart monitor, it will enter the calories for you

    1) I didn't say you DON'T burn calories lifting.

    2) I disagree that you burn more, especially as a blanket statement.

    Not so true. One could heavy lift for an hour an burn 350 calories while in that hour do cardio and burn 600 calories. Not to mention the muscle fibers and oxygen usage are different for both.

    I suppose it depends on the difficulty of the cardio. I can stroll around slowly for an hour and burn next to nothing.

    The same with heavy lifting though. Say one does 5 reps with as much weight as they can handle safely, but rests 3-5 minutes each set (not uncommon with maximal lifts for low reps). Even if one did 40 minutes of high intensity benching, it probably wouldn't exceed 400 calories.
    So yes, intensity of cardio would matter, but if both had the same intensity, cardio would burn more calories in the same hour.
