Broke my foot yesterday!

I've been working at this for the last three months. I exercise a lot and was losing really slowly in the beginning, but I think I was also gaining muscle from exercise and recently the weight really started coming off. But…yesterday I fell and broke my foot and I'm trying to figure out how to keep this going and not lose my motivation, especially because exercise will be a challenge. Any exercise ideas? Kind words? Hugs?

    Owwww!

Several times in the past eighteen months I had to stop all physical activity to heal. The first time I cracked some ribs. That was six weeks no core exercises, and I counted the days, let me tell you. The second time I was in for surgery and again, no core exercise for a couple months.

Maybe because I was so thrilled how my body responded in pretty short order to new demands I put on it, I was confident as soon as I could, I would be right back at it. I did, and I am stronger and more agile than ever.

Take the rest, be patient, and know you will go back to it with renewed energy.

I've had multiple surgeries on one of my feet, thanks to smashing it in a car accident, so you have all the virtual hugs you can stand from me. I've been there. As for ideas/advice: Switch to maintenance and up your calcium and proteins. If you take a multivitamin, make sure it has lysine in it to aid in calcium absorption. You want to make sure your body has the nutrients it needs to mend the bone.

For exercise, consult your physical/physio therapist for ideas that you can do. Whatever else you do, err on the side of caution, and don't do anything that risks you falling on your leg. That way lies unnecessary pain and suffering. Better to fall a couple of steps back, than to worsen your injury and push yourself back even farther. This is temporary, just go with it.

FWIW, I broke my left ankle in a fall almost three weeks ago. Right at the beginning of a fitness challenge I was helping put together, that I wanted to participate in. :grimacing:

That said...It has taken me almost this long to deal with the fact that I have the calorie burn of a frigging paperweight, and I am lucky if my fitbit shows more than a thousand "crutch steps" per day.

On the plus side? I am logging a LOT of couch time, which as allowed me to take up crocheting, again, and I am also reveling in binge watching shows on NetFlix, and am allowing my husband to wait on me hand and foot, and not feel guilty about it.

I am, in fact, about to head to the ortho for follow-up x-rays in just a few, and am hoping that this sucker is healing the way it is supposed to.

Because not even a great state of mind and a wonderful attitude are going to make us heal faster, common sense must prevail in that we need to LISTEN to what the docs tell us and be totally mindful of our limitations so that we do heal properly and not have anything stupid like a self-induced setback happen to us.

I'm sorry you got hurt. Would it be wrong to ask how you did it? I fell over one of my dogs that got under foot that night, although I've been telling people that i fell off my stripper shoes at pole dancing class.

I hope that you feel better soon, and that you have decent pain meds if you need them (and if you do, lots of fiber, because those suckers can really bind a body up, if ya know what I mean, LOL...).

ETA...If it were me (oh, wait...it kinda IS me), I would not even worry about exercise/working out/etc. and pretty much concentrate on doing what's best for your body right now.

Thank you. I need to remind myself to take it easy. I really don't want to prolong this. And thanks linnea4 for the nutritional advice.

What they said about checking and getting advice from your Dr and Physio. Am assuming its in a pot and not painful, so you are restricted in mobility as much as anything?

You can google exercises for people in wheelchairs? For cardio then ive seen people use the rope machine, where you pull rope and the Krankl machine where you pedal with your hands. They would give you an excellent cardio workout if you have access. Wouldnt surprise me if people in wheelchairs can still do a variety of exercises with a pair of dumbbells.

Oh and whilst you are out of the exercise game then tighten up your logging. Be patient and safe.

Good idea on the wheelchair exercises. I don't want to get too mushy when I've been working so hard to have muscle.
