Weighing Food

Hi There!

When you weigh fruits or veggies, to you weigh the part you are going to eat, or the whole fruit/vegetable first? I know it doesn't matter for most veggies, but I'm concerned more or less about avocados. Mine was 298 whole, only got about 200g of "flesh". I didn't know if the caloric info on here reflects a portion for discard.

Thank you.

I only weight what I'm going to eat and log it.

Just the parts you're going to eat.

I also only weigh the edible part. In the case of apples, I weigh first, then weigh the core after and subtract that.

I peel the banana and then weigh it.

But stuff like bananas, oranges, apples, etc. I weigh whole first, eat it, and then subtract the weight of the skin/peel/core etc.

    I weigh what I'll eat.

For pitted fruit, this means weighing it before and after I eat it. I could cut slices, but it's fun to bite into a Honeycrisp Apple and suck in the sweet, juicy goodness. Slices just don't cut it, lol. And I'm not coring every damn cherry, so I weigh the stems and pits when I'm done.

For my berries, I stick the bowl on the scale, zero, add strawberries and jot the number down, zero, add raspberries and jot that number down, etc.

Pomegranate is a bear. I usually suck the yummy juice and spit out the seeds. So, that's about impossible to record accurately. Luckily, the thing is such a bear to do that I don't do it a lot. (Could buy the seeds, but am generally too cheap to pay for things I can do myself.)

Weighing is a pain sometimes, lol. :)

That's how I make my cereal. Pour milk, put on scale, zero out, add cereal, record and zero out, add fruit, record and zero, add whatever nuts, record and zero. I put avocado on fresh Mozz cheese and I was curious about that as I slice it before hand. Today, I just weighed it before washing and cutting in half. Was surprised at how much weight is lost to pit and peel. Sad.

There have been times I wanted a few cherries - maybe two or three - and then decided that I wouldn't have them because I didn't want to bother getting the paper towel, weighing them, recording it, saving the trash, weighing the trash, recording that and then logging the difference.

When I start skipping food because I don't want to bother logging, I know I need a logging break. :)

Feeding my Nutella addition is easy that way; put jar on scale, take out my 15g which is like nothing, then replace jar on a high shelf that requires a chair to get to.

I only weigh what I am going to eat.

For example, when I eat a banana, I peel it, then weigh it. When I eat an apple, I remove the core and then weigh it.

It makes sense to weigh only what you are going to eat, but you won't be able to convert that weight into a calorie count unless you are eating the same parts that were included in the database.
