Fit Bit

I just got my Fit Bit today and have synced it with MFP...one of my questions is how do I stop it from adding calories onto my daily allowance...I do the exercise to lose weight not to be able to eat more.

thanks for any help ...

Honestly, I have the zip and all I did was not sync it to MFP. I have it connected to a different site because I can earn some points for doing steps, but I use the pedometer mostly to see how I do step wise on work days and to remember to get up and move around at least some on my days off. I have my MFP setting at lightly active because I'm on my feet all shift and get anywhere from 8,000 to 16,000 steps depending what I need to do that day. I only add if I do a cardio session at gym or some of the weightlifting, which I do in part to eat a little more some days and still have a decent deficit.

So, that's my approach with MFP and fitbit.

If they are linked fitbit will add / deduct calories (deduct only if you enable the setting). That's what is supposed to happen. It's set up this way so you maintain a healthy deficit. If you are following MFP the way it's set up to - i.e. Eat back exercise - then you don't need to do anything. If you are a TDEE person unlink them - and use fitbit to make sure you have your activity correct.

It'll take trial & error to find what works for you. Here's what worked for me:

    Connect your accounts: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/apps/show/30

Do not log any step-based activity. Your Fitbit is already tracking that for you.

Log non-step exercise (like biking or swimming) in Fitbit—never MFP.

Log food & drink (including water) in MFP.

    Enable negative calorie adjustments: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings

Set your activity level to sedentary: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/change_goals_guided & set your goal to .5 lb. per week for each 25 lbs. you need to lose.

Follow your MFP goal, eating back your Fitbit adjustments. Your Fitbit burn is your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). If you eat less than your Fitbit burn, you will lose weight.

MFP has a Fitbit Users group: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/1290-fitbit-users
