How elevated should my back foot be when I perform this exercise? In my gym, there are three stools: one short one, one medium one (which would be the same as resting my foot on a normal bench), and one tall one. Most videos on youtube show the split squat being done with the back foot resting on a normal bench. However, my trainer showed me this exercise using the shortest stool.

It would be easier to balance and slightly less of a squat on the shortest stool, so I imagine you should work on your form there and move up to the medium stool.

The short stool is easiest. Work your way up. How far out your other leg is makes it more difficult as well (and how far you go down).

Use the one that you can do with correct form. If the lowest one is too easy, then progress up.
