In Praise of Carrots

Lost some weight, fell off the wagon, and now I'm back on track. And one of my favorite helpers this time around is raw carrots. They are the perfect snack. They're filling enough to tide me over when I still have some time to go until dinner, sweet enough to count as dessert if I've already used up too many of my calories to have something sweeter, and they last a while if you want them to so you can just have something to crunch on while watching TV, browsing the internet, or otherwise on break from everyday activities. They're easy to transport, they don't make a mess, and they're not terribly expensive.

The most helpful part about them is that they're great for discerning whether you're actually hungry or just feel like eating. Sometimes I think I'm hungry, have a carrot, turns out I just felt like snacking, but it's not a big setback because it was only 20-30 calories. Or if you eat the carrot and are even more hungry, it's not like you just used up a bunch of calories you had wanted to use for your meal.

Long story short, carrots rule. Recognize.

    Totally agreed. Been hungrier the last couple days and carrots is what's managed to let me stay under my calorie goal.

    I wish I felt the same way about carrots. I can't stand them raw. I do like them cooked, though!

    Since blue is opposite from orange on the color wheel, I will simply eat a lot of blueberries and drink blue powerade and they should cancel each other out.

    My go to crunchy low cal snack. Plus it keeps me "regular" and no "detox" is needed.

    I eat them almost every day also - probably my #1 go to snack. I really like the whole carrots that you have to peel and chop the best, but I make due with the baby carrots when I have to.

    I bought the baby carrots my entire adult life (always ended up throwing out half the package). Couldn't understand why my mom always had to be so cheap and buy/peel/chop the whole ones. Too time-consuming for me! Weeeeell, one day I watched a show about how much more delicious whole carrots taste versus baby carrots. So I tried them. Omg! they are so worth the time/effort to peel and chop! Carrots with the tops still on are supposed to be even more delicious. I haven't tried that yet. Why are moms always right?! Lol

  • There is absolutely nothing like a fresh carrot pulled and eaten straight from the garden! Even my husband likes carrots :D

    This happened to my grandma when I was younger. She ate a bag of baby carrots like every day, to go with her grilled chicken breast dinner. Obviously she didn't have the healthiest relationship with food.

    But besides that, yes. Baby carrots and hummus is my go-to side dish for lunch.

    I agree. I hate that slimy stuff on the baby carrots, I prefer to peel and chop my own carrot sticks, Whole carrots last longer in the fridge as well so I buy the BIG bag, I always ended up throwing out the baby ones as well. Carrot sticks were my morning snack today.

    It's amazing how much differently they taste, isn't it? I, too, prefer the whole carrots. I scrub them well and eat them with the skin.

    And, personally, I eat celery and cucumbers this way much more than I do carrots. Celery and cucumber is my evening snack.

    Celery is one of those foods that I absolutely can't stand, lol.

    The baby carrots I've been buying don't have any slimy stuff on them... but we have some from the garden as well.

    Agreed. Also love zucchini sliced thin and dipped in hummus.
