HIIT duration

When doing HIIT, how long do you go fast & how long do you recover? I mostly use elliptical type machines. I try to get my HR up to about 90% which takes about 30 - 60 sec. Then bring it back down to about 80% which takes 1 - 3 min. I usually go for 20 - 30 min.

True HIIT is done for short periods of time, like 10 minutes. I put my treadmill on 8.5 mph, which is a sprint for me. Run 30 sec, stand on rails 30 sec. Repeat 9x.0

This is not true HIIT. For true HIIT you have to be doing a full out sprint that kills you. If you're actually doing that, the sprint is 15-20 seconds max, if you can sustain it for longer than that, it's not a sprint.0
