Here's a little info on the kitty and Brando from the IMDB trivia page on "The Godfather":
The cat held by Marlon Brando in the opening scene was a stray the actor found while on the lot at Paramount, and was not originally called for in the script. So content was the cat that its purring muffled some of Brando's dialogue, and, as a result, most of his lines had to be looped.
And you can see the baby was enjoying itself.1 -

I had no idea about the cat being a stray. I figured it was a trained cat because it continued to keep wanting the loves. In a way, that makes the scene that much more remarkable.0 -
