Garmin Vivofit or Polar for swimming?

I currently have a Polar FT4 and it works quite well, but I've recently lost my HRM part. Well I say lost, I mean someone stole it :(

Anyway, I'm looking at getting a Vivofit + HRM. I do a lot of swimming, will this device record my HR and also calories whilst swimming? Or shall I just get a new HRM for my Polar?

If money is not a huge issue I would consider a Garmin 910xt or 920xt. While these do not use HR while in the water. I am not sure how Polar does HR in the water but the Garmin devices recognize stroke type, count laps for you, and show you a detailed swimming breakdown by interval or laps. The calories for swimming are based on stroke type, age, weight and some formula.

The problem I see with getting a replacement strap is they are like $40, and my FT4 was only $50 to begin with so I would be too annoyed on principle to get another strap. That really sucks that someone stole your strap. :(

Are you planning to use it for anything else? Is the vivofit sort of like a fitbit? It doesn't look like a HRM at all. I wear a polar FT4 while swimming right now, but I am getting a Garmin Swim because it detects laps/strokes and is much better for specifically swimming. There are other swim watches swim.com/swim-watches
