I was wondering why MFP shows 172 calories, 2 g of carb and 8 g of sugar for 2 cups of homemade chicken bone broth. Does that sound right? Thanks.

No. Look up chicken stock or broth.

Unless it is your homemade recipe, don't bother with any of the homemade ones.

The database is full of user-added entries that are inaccurate or just plain wrong. Anything that says "homemade" or "generic" is bound to be off. Anything with a star on it should be triple-checked.

Having said that, chicken bone broth is a really, really tough thing to estimate, especially if it's homemade. Adding up the ingredients is inaccurate, since you strain them out at the end. Plus, most of the best chicken soup recipes are more art than science, and accurate ingredient measurements would be tough to come by, since they're made with a "little of this, little of that" sort of method. I've never been able to do better than a wild guesstimate for my mom's chicken soup.

TBH, even for my own, homemade chicken broth I have no idea how to estimate how many calories go into it… I can add up the chicken and the vegetables, but then how much of that goes into the broth? It has some calories for sure, since the chicken fat will melt into it, but even then go figure out how much exactly.

With chicken soup, I just count the calories of the ingredients I put into it, without the broth. The logic being that whatever calories the broth come they will have been absorbed from the veggies and chicken, so the total should be roughly the same as when the ingredients were raw.

Thanks everyone for your knowledge and input. I feel better now about using what I froze.
