New Rules of Lifting (not for women)

I'm thinking of getting this book for my husband for Christmas. He is trying to get back into a workout routine. I hear a lot of women talk about this book for women. What about you men? Did you find it helpful?

It's the same program- and as long as it's adhered to - a man or woman will have success with it.
More often than naught- for a beginner- ANY beginner program is adequate as long as it's adhered to consistently.
Consistency trumps specificity for a beginner.0 -
he has three or four books, I have three of them, including the womens book for my wife. I like how he explains everything and gives routines that will last for a year if you follow them. If your husband is a beginner I think it is a great book, I was a beginner and found it very easy to read and follow. As with anything his books have evolved with new science and workouts.0

I have this book and used the program for a few months. I still use the pre-workout routine that they provided. I however went to Wendler's 5/3/1 since I like the more compound exercises, like back squat, dead lift and presses. 5/3/1 just seems to have a better progression for me.
If it has been a long time since your husband has done anything and is a little more seasoned with age like myself, it is a great book to get him back into lifting. It does a great job of easing one back into some of the full compound lifts without hopefully injuring ones self.0 -
I have New Rules Supercharged. It has a lot of great information and good programming templates to work with.0

My husband used this book in the beginning, good solid foundation if you're just getting started, I do know that every now and then he will refer back to this book. I concur with the lady and the gentlemen on this thread!0

I have been following this program since February and I've found it to be a really useful tool for someone who has never lifted weights before (I'm 53) The program varies often enough that it doesn't become boring and 10 months in I'm starting to recognize that certain exercises are brought in to rotation in order to prepare for future exercises and my strength is much much stronger than when I started. I deadlifted a pb of 160lbs for 1 rep yesterday! yay me!0

I'm thinking of getting that one for next year - is it significantly different to be worth the purchase?

Thanks everyone for the input! My husband isn't exactly new to exercise. He was a career soldier and had to maintain physical fitness. However, he has been retired from the military for about 10 years and he recently has started working out with weights to regain lost strength. From my perspective, he needs to learn some consistency. He has a tendency to kill himself and then not go back for a week. I think I will pick this up. Is it different enough from the one for women that I should get that one for me?
Also, is there room in the book to document your workouts?
Thanks again!0 -
D, I have the one for women, and I love it! Even though I'm doing another program now, I think it's great for women. I don't believe there is a "workout log" but you can get one off of amazon pretty cheap. The women's version is a bit different considering your using it. But like the men's version, very sound information on nutrition and lifting. I think you'll like it alot!0

he gives you a temp plate to follow your workouts, I use a notebook to chart myself. The women's book is different routines, designed for a woman's body, after reading that your husband was Ex-military, I would say yes get the book, this is vastly different and he shows pictures of correct form. One of teh things I liek is he has different programs and it changes after a few weeks, so it is not the same thing time after time, it evolves and changes. That is why I bought the second book, for progression, and as other posters say, once you get into the routines you can expand to other programs, but teh mindset is the same, "change" does a body good.0

You can print the workout sheets from the website - they are quite detailed.0
