Running in snowy/icy places-- your favorite strategy?

I live in northern New England-- about 1/2 hour from the Canadian border-- so it's pretty snowy/icy here all winter! I am an outdoor exerciser for the most part and get to really miss running at this time of year, when there tends to be a lot of ice on the back roads where I run. I also cross-country ski but the snow is terrible right now so can't do that.

Other north country outdoor runners-- what do you do about the slipperiness and the early dark? I have put screws in my shoe treads before. I guess I'm interested in hearing what others do.

Thanks!

lights... lots and lots of lights. Lights > reflective clothing

Yaktrax or similar + proper shoes and socks to deal with cold and snow/slush/water.

I also shorten my stride when it gets slippery... keep your weight over your feet and you'll be less apt to slip.

Definitely yaktrax for the ice/snow. I have some for working outdoors in the winter and they're great. I'd still avoid the ice if you can. Aside from reflective clothing, there are little blinking light you can attach to your clothing.

There is a trail I run regularly but it is prone to black ice...I generally just wait a couple days after a heavy snow to allow the town crew to clear and salt the path. Even then, I am very careful when running. Funnily enough, last winter I fell three times. Not running but walking...

I need to figure out how to attach my very nice flashing red bicycle light to my clothing!

Maybe what I need to do is scope out the roads during the day and see where I can go that's not terribly icy.
