G'day everybody - Merry Christmas.
- I am a very fat shy new boy and have heaps to lose. Gut measures 124cm and for my height should weight 59kg.
- well started at 108 in November - bought a fitbit and scales plus used this program every day and on last Monday was 99.7kg and thrilled.
- as Christmas is just around the corner bought a Bortocci Leg of Ham and have cut off most of the fat and enjoyed that meat - in moderation - each day with mainly garden salads .
- the wife and I are doing the same but I weigh myself each morning out of the shower and I am shocked.
- Our calorie intake is less than 1000 most days but from Monday until now my weight has increased by 1.7 kgs.
- each day there is a steady move up and i wonder if anybody else has found the same.
- If i was stuffing myself i could understand so to see what happens i will stop eating ham and replace the protein with lamb or beef.
- would be interested to hear if you have had a similar experience
- Kind regards

peter

How tall are you? 59 is very low for a dude, I'm small-boned and not too tall, but the lightest I've ever been is 68.

    That's not it man.
    That's very far from it.

If you're really eating 1000 calories most days, you're setting yourself up for a host of problems.

I love ham, and it's a good source of lean protein. Ham is not the problem.

Ham is usually high in sodium. Sodium causes water weight gain. So that is probably your problem. Don't worry about fluctuations, look at the bigger picture.

You can lose weight and still eat ham regularly.

You and your wife should eat more than 1000 calories a day. 1500 would be healthier and more sustainable.

1000 calories or less a day is dangerous ground.

secondly- odds are if it was pre-prepared it's high in salt- which means water retention.

Ham is cured processed pork. Processed meats...not good:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham
Ham is a processed pork food, which undergoes preservation through curing, smoking, or salting. Ham was traditionally made only from the hind leg of swine, and referred to that specific cut of pork.

    +1
You have to eat more! At the very, very least, eat the amount of calories that MFP is telling you to. Why are you making up your own plan when a perfectly good one is right here and would help you?

It's not the ham. It's you. You should also be measuring and weighing everything you eat and drink because you could very well be eating 3000 calories when you THINK you're only eating 1000.

I don't think Ham is the problem here, with the exception of the sodium it contains.

Weigh & Measure all foods you eat, log them into MFP... follow your MFP goal.

There is no reason for a full grown adult to be only eating 1000 calories, unless directed by their doctor... and even then I'd find it questionable.

The only issues that i see is....

You don't sound like you are weighing and tracking your intake.

You are eating to little for no point, Eat 1500

You need to exercise - Cardio and weights, start slow

You say garden salad, but how do we know your not adding salad cream or a ton of oil and other high cal dressings

Stop weighing yourself everyday, Weight can go up 2 or 3 kg a day and drop the next, water weight ect

If you see a steady loos over a month then all good mate just relax

Dont just eat ham and salad every day. Eat all the foods you like in moderation and make healthy choices along the way, they will become habit

Lean meats, Vegies and salad should make up most of your diet then get in good fats and some tasty carbs
