Think I will sell my fitbit.....

RIght now I think I made the wrong choice on buying one. I just started my journey and there is no way I can do 10,000 steps a day. I had open heart surgery last year and need to lose at least 50 pounds before I feel comfortable on using it. I ordered a HRM today from Amazon and think I will do much better with that. Anyone almost 60 years old with medical problems achieve 10,000 steps a day????

You don't have to do 10,000 steps a day! I haven't for months, except for the last 2 days. I just like that it monitors my activity. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.

Your fitbit will monitor your activity throughout the day. The HRM is good for workouts. It depends on what you are looking to get out of both of them.

Just because it is suggested to walk 10,000 steps a day does not mean you have to. You could always use it to monitor your daily activity and make sure you are moving more and more each week.
  • 10,000 steps a day is a lofty goal. On the days I actually hit it (maybe once or twice a week), I am thrilled. Otherwise, the Fitbit is still a great tool for monitoring your own activity against yourself. Don't try to compete with anyone else if that is making you feel uncomfortable. Compete against yourself. If you do 3,000 steps today, try and do 3,500 tomorrow. Or, just realize that some days are going to be less active days. Buying the Fitbit was the best thing I've ever done for myself from a health standpoint in conjunction with monitoring what I eat with MFP. Both have changed my life dramatically.

You can change your goal from 10,000 to whatever you want..

A heart rate monitor is really only good for workouts where you get your heart rate up to a certain level. I think the Fitbit would actually serve you better based on your current health situation.

You will be surprised what you can do once you start doing something. Once you start syncing that fitbit and see what you've done today you will want to do a little better tomorrow. The only person judging your success is you. I have learned that as badly as I want to be number one in my fitbit group or among my fitbit friends, having a sedentary job and a small child living with me have a negative impact on getting as many steps in a day as I would like to get. Much less very active minutes!

I have learned that I get really crappy sleep. I am not in bed long enough and I wake up several times in the night. I think I know why and when I get really serious about getting fit I will change the behaviors of mine that are causing that problem. Without fitbit I wouldn't have a record of my sleep and wouldn't correlate my poor sleep hygiene with my lack of weight loss and crappy morning mood.

Once I finally get serious about the food I am eating I believe that FitBit will be my best tool in the fitness game. If you want to sell it I'm sure there will be takers.

By the way, if you are not fit enough to walk 5 miles in a day how are you fit enough to work out hard enough to need HRM to tell you calories burned, etc?

    Wishing you great success!

Thanks all for all of your comments and support. I will keep it. I will do it for me, if I walk 3000 today than tomorrow I might get to 3500. Thanks for all of your help. I will read the manual on how to set the number of steps down to make me feel more comfortable. Right now it's baby steps!!!

I do alot of water aerobics. Somehow the water likes my knees better than land!!

    Thanks again,

Great attitude! Use it for motivation, and set reasonable goals for yourself. I loved it once I started looking at it with the right mind set. I started doing things like parking farther away from places, etc. Grow with it. And best of luck!
