Overnight weight gain

So I finally started losing weight. Kudos to me! I lost 10 pounds since my last weigh in at the doctors office which was around last September. I weighed over 190 pounds. And last night I weighed 180.5! Anyways, I woke up this morning and checked my weight and it was 185. How did I gain so much weight overnight?? I will admit I did eat a little more than I should've last night. Did I really gain 5 pounds of body fat from eating last night? Should I skip a meal today ? Should I water fast for the day to lose the 5 pounds again? I was super excited and then seeing the number stressed me out way too much.

No. Weight fluctuates for many, many reasons. You probably just gained water weight from the salt intake and from adding more food (restoring your glycogen stores). It will go away within a few days as you eat normally.0

Normal fluctuation. There's a whole gamut of things that will make your weight fluctuate upwards temporarily.
Just keep going.0 -
Did you over eat by 17,500 calories? Gosh, I hope not0

I would check to see if the scale is reliable. To gain 4.5 pounds of fat you would need to eat 15,750 calories. I don`t know what you ate last night, but this doesn`t seem likely. Also, if you had already eaten before your evening weigh, there is no way for your weight to go up from the food (it would not weigh more in your fat cells than it did in your digestive tract). Are you wearing the same clothes you weighed yoursef in before? What do you have in your pockets? Is there a chance you were leaning a little on a wall or counter when you weighed yourself before? If you`ve had a lot to drink, it could be water weight. My weight tends to go up when I eat out as most fast food has a lot of sodium, which causes water retention. I can also retain water from horomone fluctuations. You don`t have to drink water to retain water, your body also takes water from food.
Most websites recommend weighing once a week, at the same time of day, wearing the same clothes, so that you don`t get frustrated by things like water weight fluctuation, or the weight of the food in your digestive tract. I find I tend to retain a little more once a month, but my overall rate of loss is not affected, so I don`t worry about that week. Water weight is part of lean body mass, and when you are trying to lose weight, you are trying to lose fat. Do not worry about water fluctuations, and do not do extreme things like fasting to deal with water weight. Just try to eat your macros and stay in a calorie deficit, and the weight will come off at about the rate that MFP calculates. You can go lower sodium if you like. It is easier if you use whole foods (fruits and vegetables) and prepare your own food, as opposed to useing packaged, processed foods and eating out. MFP has probably set a sodium goal for you in your Food log.
Don't panic at day-to-day changes, steady and slow is the way fat loss works. Good luck0 -
To gain 1 pound, you have to eat 3500 calories MORE than your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
I am 5 feet 4 inches, and I weigh 162. My TDEE is 1962.
I would have to eat my TDEE plus 3500 calories -- a total of 5500 calories -- in a single day to gain one pound of body tissue (fat, muscle, whatever).
To gain five pounds of tissue weight, I'd have to eat 19500 calories in one day.
So, since you probably didn't eat 3500 extra calories, your extra weight isn't coming from additional tissue. The extra weight is coming from:
- water retention from the foods you ate
- water retention because your body is doing something that requires water retention
- poop
Take a crap, have a lovely day, eat a bit below your TDEE, and tomorrow you will be down the five pounds. And maybe more!

PurpleDandelion2 as the others have stated it is not a FAT gain. I eat LCHF but did a carb nite (only once) and ate 300 carbs and gained six pounds over night. A pound of carbs will pull in two pounds of water. 8 days later it was all gone. There is no need for you to do anything I expect except stay on your plan. Blips will happen.

Thank you for your nice and well detailed responses I had Chinese food, which definitely had a good amount of salt. And I did drink a ton of water. I was quite worried there! But hopefully it will come right off in a few days ! Thank you guys so much0
