I missed my 30 lb goal by today. But I'm not too terribly discouraged. I will reach for 30 at my Jan 5th weigh-in. I just gotta do the work and stay honest with myself. Who can tell me how missing their goal affects them? What do you do to keep on track after?

I've never thought of putting a date to the moment I reach my ideal weight. I'm just letting it happen as it goes...

That's the problem with assigning deadlines to goals. Huge disappointment when you miss them - and you lose sight of how great you're doing by only focusing on the calendar.

    I spent a year being a project manager. Here's what I learned.

SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time- bound) goals are great. They're wonderful and keep us motivated.

If you do not build slack into your goal, you're asking for trouble.

Agree with Noel. Flexible goals are important. Set them, yes, but give yourself some leeway for unplanned circumstances. They happen all the time.

I've also noticed that my goals to in spurts sometimes: I'll achieve one goal easily but struggle with another I've set at the same time. It all balances out in the end.

Oh yeah, there is no way I'd attach a date to my weight loss goal, it would be really demoralizing for me. I set weight goals, for sure - I just work hard 'till I meet them.

If you like date related goals, maybe set them by month instead of an exact date? So you have wiggle room?

I don't set a time limit on weight goals. I count my success if I manage to incorporate a new behavior, like staying in my calorie limits for the day or adding an exercise.

There's a pretty good app called Happy Scale that uses your previous logged weights and at what speed you're loosing to give you a rough time scale for when you'll be done. It tells me I should have lost the rest of my weight by March.

It doesn't really. When I started losing, I told myself I wanted to be under 200 pounds by my birthday. That gave me nine months to lose close to 50 pounds. I hit it three weeks to the day after my birthday. But when I realized I wasn't going to make it, I told myself it was okay and I had made so much progress anyway.

I don't set goals based on weight loss and definitely not by a certain date.

Goals I do set are: weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly biking/running/ lifting and if I don't reach those I look to see why and what I could have done differently so that I can better set new goals and successfully reach them.

I did set a date goal last year (2013): be under 170 lb. by Dec. 31. I made it, but just barely, even though I was making much faster progress from January to August.

But you know what? I wouldn't have been upset if I hadn't made it. That goal was aspirational. My deeper goal was to get a grip on eating more moderate portions and moving a little bit more. The date goal just gave me some longer-term reason to keep doing what I was doing every day.

What if you had made a goal to do the work to the best of your ability?

As others have already said, I don't attach a time limit to my goal. I feel that sets me up for failure.

Though I suppose if you must do so, a long-term goal vs. short-term would give you more wiggle room. You don't want to discourage yourself because you didn't lose x amount by this time. You're still losing...and that's what matters.
