Hawaii or Hawai'i?

Just in the last couple of years, I've noticed an apostrophe show up in this state's name. I see it now as I watch the bowl game on ESPN.
Why is the apostrophe there & when did the spelling change?

    Hawai'i has always TECHNICALLY been how it is spelled, just people get lazy. Plus the apostrophe doesn't fit into any of the rules of English. But if you sound the word out, you will notice you pronounce the "I" at the end twice, hence why the apostrophe is there.
