Although I have belonged to various gyms for the past 10 years and I know how to use the equiptment I am still unsure of what I should be doing.

My goal is to loose weight, but also to tone. I prefer to avoid free weights, and can only do the epicilical for 5-8 minutes before my legs are burning.

Is anyonemwilling to share their successful routines?

To be honest, you're going to need to get more serious about strength training. You will not bulk up or look like a man.

I know it's not the reply you wanted, but I want you to achieve the results you desire--to be frank, you aren't achieving them with your current plan of attack. Along with eating properly, a good strength training program will help you look and feel better (for instance: minimizing/eliminating back or knee pain; losing fat while retaining muscle).

    I recommend Starting Strength.

Do as much as you can for as long as you can and just keep trying to do a little more or a little harder each time. If you don't want weights than do body weight exercises. If that's to strenuous, walk. The key in whatever you choose is just to push yourself. If it seems too easy than it is. Make yourself breath harder and sweat and you'll be fine.

First of all, make an appointment with one of the trainers at your gym. Tell them what your goals are, then let them show you how to achieve your goals. Have them help you develop a fitness plan and write it down and keep track of what you do each time you go. Have a fitness evaluation done, so you can have it redone in 3 months to see the progress you've made. I have belonged to a fitness club for a number of years and have used the elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike, and weight machines. I would make myself go, but I didn't really enjoy it. But when I found fitness classes then I really got hooked! Now I can't wait to get to the gym. I've made new friends at my classes and I truly miss my classes when I can't go. I've gotten some of my friends interested and are now coming to the classes with me. I go to a low and light aerobics class, body pump (weight lifting to music and in a class) pilates and yoga. I love them all and they all do different things for your body. Also I have had some friends say regular sessions with a personal trainer have helped them tremendously! I belong to a fitness club where all the classes are free with your membership. I would highly recommend belonging to one that offers that. Hope this helps!
