Fat rolls vs No fat rolls

So this question has been on my mind for a bit. Why do some people have fat rolls but for others, the fat just sits in front of their stomachs and they have no fat rolls? I'm 5'3 and 180 pounds and I have fat rolls, but a friend of mine who is the same height as me and 10 pounds heavier doesn't have any. Is it just genetics? I'm really confused.

Yes, just genetics. I never really carried any weight in my stomach area to point of rolls or a muffin top. Mine is mostly in my thunder thighs!!! As you start losing weight you might start noticing how really different everyone's body is and how the number on the scale doesn't always correlate with a certain size. I'm 5'2" range between 147-150 and wear a size 2-4, when I was 130 I wore a size 10.

Genetics. I take after my dad. My mom is my height, weighs more than me and yet she wears a 4 pants. I on the other hand am at 133 and still wear a 10.

Probably depends on % of body fat too. Your heavier friend might have more muscle/LBM; this might mean she actually has a lower % of body fat

I too would say it's down to genetics, for the most part. Even at 95 lbs., walking several miles a day, gym class daily, and weight bearing workouts nightly, I had this little teeny belly pooch. I'm not talking about a muffin top, I had not a shred of extra fluff there, my waist was taut and firm as a drum. I mean way down, as if I were in the early months of pregnancy.

I have had that pooch since I was 11. It is here to stay!

Where you store fat is programmed. The amount of it is somewhat more under your control. :) Love what you have, and try not to agonize over whatever part of this you have no control over. Just do your best and get down to the weight you want to be, firm up however you can, but almost everybody has that one problem spot. One's best is the most anyone can do. :)

This makes sense. Or maybe OP's friend has more visceral than subcutaneous fat.

You mean muscle weighs more than...??? Wait, no...I can't say it. Not here.

But yes, everything that's been said. Part of it could be that your friend has more muscle (which is more dense, thus weighs more per cubic inch) but a lot if not all of it could be just the way they carry it. Some people get the lucky genes and naturally carry their fat in less noticeable areas.

Correct. It is genetic as well as related to body composition. There are several different types of fat. The amount and location of muscle on the body would also impact body fat rolls. A history of obesity/being smaller would also impact size and location of body fat rolls. For example, someone who recently gained a lot of weight may have tighter skin than someone who was bigger and lost weight. How fast the weight was gained will also impact how the excess weight is stored.

I think if you have fat rolls, the solution is just to gain more weight to stretch out your skin.

    Great question, Jojo.

I think a lot of it is genetics and how our weight naturally distributes. We can't spot reduce, but we can work with what we have and work on body recomp through weight lifting. This does not mean our problem areas will magically disappear, but it might help redistribute our weight. I have seen amazing changes in my body since starting heavy weight lifting and getting to a normal BMI range.
