Down 4 sizes or 8? I've never understood this

I started at a size 20 and now I'm down to a size 12. So would I be down 4 pants sizes as there is a size 12, 14, 16, 20. Or am I down 8 pants sizes as 20-12=8? I feel like an idiot asking this but I've never really understood what people mean when they say that. I don't even plan on using the term.

I'd say 4....I'm down from a 48 to a 36.....48 - 46 - 44 -42 - 40 - 38 -36...so that would be 6 sizes. I never understood the difference of 2 between two sizes....but there are short sizes. A petit 48 is a 24, a 46 is a 23...so 24 to 23 is also one size.

You are down 4 pants sizes. You do not count the odd numbers because they are not sizes in women's clothes- they are juniors sizes. It's not like you went from size 20 to size 19 at some point.

Yeah... 4. Odd sizes are for juniors. It's for cut more than measurements.

It's confusing, but I'd call that down 4: 18-16-14-12. Like others have said, since you don't go from 14 to 13, I wouldn't count 13.
