to the OP, if you didn't pull the trigger on the Vivofit, I would wait awhile longer....Garmin is releasing the Vivofit 2 sometime in the first quarter. There is already a place to preorder it on Amazon. I like the Vivofit platform better than Fitbit (those are the only two I've tried), mainly due to the fact that I don't have to keep charging another device. The phone is already enough to keep up with :) From what I read, the Vivofit 2 is an update on what was already a pretty good product. It has a backlight for the display, which many will find useful, imo. And you can't beat that 1+ year battery life (albeit mfg's claims can can sometimes be exagerated). As soon as they begin to ship them, I plan to put in an order. Good luck!

I got a Fitbit Surge on 12/26. It is my first activity tracker and Fitbit product. There have been a number of mixed reviews with some problems reported with HR, GPS, steps, etc.

FWIW, here are my initial opinions after 5 days:

    *snipped for brevity*

Overall I would highly recommend it. I think the cons I put above are either rectifiable once I'm more familiar with it (GPS and steps) while the other issues aren't deal breakers (alarm and size).

Thank you for that review, it definitely helps. I have been considering upgrading my Flex to something with a heart rate monitor and possibly GPS. Because I swim laps and take water aerobics classes, I need something that is water resistant. This pretty much left me deciding between the Up3 and Surge. I decided to wait until I can read more reviews and real life experiences for both. I am getting most of the information I want from my Flex and have been losing steadily (86 lb in 54 weeks) so I should continue to "dance with who brung me".

I ended up spending the money I had set aside for a new tracker on a waterproof IPod so I now have tunes while I swim my laps.

I ended up ordering the vivofit and have had it just a few days now. I love it. It was a little tricky figuring it all out at first but that was mostly because i got a new phone the same day it arrived.

There are some issues with the garmin software and info with MFP is slow to go back and forth. Hopefully it really is just temporary. I keep a spreadsheet with all of my info so it really isnt necessary for them to talk to eachother. But it will be super nice when all of the wrinkles are ironed out. I suspect it has to do with all of the resolutioners creating traffic? idk.

I wish i would have had a HR monitor a long time ago. My bikes HR is awful. I was starting to think i had some sort of strange heart issue. The garmin HR monitor is comfortable even though i had to position it sorta weird to get a rate.

No matter what, it is helping me see how little i was moving around lately and has motivated me to get up more. I even added an app to my phone that goes off every 20 minutes and reminds me to get up. I am racing myself to prevent the vivofit from flashing a red line lol

    The Surge isn't submersible.

I just checked the specifications and it is rated up to 5 ATM which means that it is water resistant to 50 meters.

It's odd they mention 5ATM but say not to swim in it or shower in it. I have one on my desk and it doesn't look submersible. It has 3 unsealed buttons and an open charging port. The big glass face looks like it'd be scratched by pool walls easily, too.

Can I wear my Surge swimming?
Your Surge is water resistant, meaning it is rain and splash proof and can stand up to even the sweatiest workout. It should be removed before swimming or showering.

    From the specs page:

    Water Resistance
Surge has been tested up to 5 ATM meaning it is sweat, rain and splash proof. However, the device is not swim proof.

That is very odd! Just reinforces the fact that my decision to wait was the right one! When I am finally ready to upgrade (assuming I am ever ready) there might be more waterproof models available, who actually use the ratings correctly.
