I use essential oils to make a scented body spray, moisturizer, and deodorant, to avoid the strange chemicals in store bought ones, but I do not use them for "medicinal" purposes. And as for those who say "pseudoscience," essential oils have the same compounds that are used in modern medicine. For example, peppermint and peppermint essential oil contain significant amounts of menthol, which produces a cooling effect pleasant on wounds, and is used in the mentholated cream you can buy at a pharmacy.

That being said, I'd take any "essential oil for weightloss" schemes with a grain of salt. There are certainly ones with diuretic effects that can help you lose water weight, or ones that might alter your appetite, but I think the safest, most sustainable way to lose weight is with your own willpower rather than depending on drugs, natural or not.

Might want to read this link:

I don't use it for weight loss, but I do use essential oils in other areas of my life. I have PCOS, and moisturizing with evening primrose oil and spot treating with tea tree oil have gotten rid of a good majority of acne breakouts that not even birth control could touch.

A coworker who was pregnant said only a certain oil helped the swelling in her ankles, but I don't know what kind of oil she used.

What exactly are looking for in an essential oil?

I marked it as spam as I have seen no posts in this thread related to anyone trying to sell anything. Unless if it had already been deleted by a moderator before I could read it.

You incorrectly marked it as spam. I am not a spambot and that is what the spam flag is for. Feel free to click report and select abuse or whatever you would like. The OP's post reads as many we have seen before trying to get people interested in what she is selling, which is essential oils.

Ah, okay, I removed the mark after reading that link; however, after reading her post, I assumed that she does not use essential oils herself, and was looking to other people for information about their experiences about them, given that this would still be the wrong forum for it, but I suppose it is possible that either of us have misinterpreted her post.

"Is anyone interested in..." leads me to believe that she's looking for people who want either a product or knowledge. I often ask my children, "Is anyone interested in the last cookie" which indicates that I am offering the last cookie.

If she had said, "I am interested in..." it would indicate that she is seeking to buy or learn about something.

We frequently see people post things looking for someone who is interested in something then they send a private message with more information on how to buy what they are selling. It's an attempt to circumvent the guidelines, but is still against the rules.

I didn't read it that way initially but after you mentioned it I could definitely see it. Even if that's not what she meant it's a good idea to be aware that it could be taken that way, imo.

I read it as asking for advice regarding essential oils, but I definitely see how it can be viewed as trying to sell something. Interesting.

One of the biggest ones on this site is people who say they are a Beachbody coach and want to run a challenge group.

1.) They look to befriend individuals via the discussion boards and invite them to a free challenge group for free. There are several to choose from (all involving some aspect of their program like BeachBody).
2.) The challenge group serves two purposes. The first is that they want to you "trust" them and feel comfortable. The second is to encourage you to try whatever they can sell you.
3.) During that time you are highly encouraged to try Shakeology/Advocare/Body by Vi/etc. (even though you don't have to).
4.) You log in everyday and share your progress with the rest of the group.
5.) You celebrate your "after" and are encouraged to do another group.
6.) Once in that group, you are worked on and primed about how "inspiring and motivating" you are and are pushed into this "great business opportunity"
7.) You will either say yes or no.
8.) If you say yes you pay your "startup" and work on building your own team.
9.) you say no...you never hear from said "friend" again.

Essential oils are not pseudoscience and sciencebasedmedicine.org is a terrible site.

Peppermint essential oil has helped calm me down in the gym and does help increase oxygen flow.

It's not right to use MFP to sell stuff. Regarding essential oils. Many unscrupulous sellers (especially those in multilevel marketing schemes) make outrageous claims about what they can and cannot do. There is actually quite a bit of science on a few of them including peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, and wintergreen. Wintergreen, for example contains salicylic acid which is the same ingredient in aspirin. It provides pain relief. Tea tree effectively addresses acne. Clinical studies actually do suggest that Eucalyptus does help clear the chest and throat. Lavender is very good for the skin. But some people will tell you anything just to get you to buy them.
