Achieving weight loss is just like achieving everything else in life: success requires planning.

Agree Mrk that planning is very important if you want to do it effectively and efficiently.

I didn't plan a thing. I randomly joined mfp and started logging, I didn't make meal plans or exercise plans; I just stuck with my daily calorie defecit and I've been losing at a steady pace. I normally suck at planning things because I'm easily intimidated by the pressure of goals, so I often just jump in before I have the chance to talk myself out of an idea. It's worked well for me, and I still have no plans in sight regarding my weight loss, just winging it can work too! I do agree that some people work best to a laid-out plan, of course, but everyone is different. So long as your system - or lack of one! - works, then it's all good. :)

I was expecting a bit more than this. It's like the weight loss advice I get from my GP: "lose weight".

One example that applies to my case is planning meals in advance. Preparing and cooking healthy meals after work can be very challenging. Preparing meals while being hungry is difficult and may not always lead to weight loss success. When I am hungry I want to eat rather sooner than later. In addition, when I am hungry I am likely to make poor food choices. Since I don’t cook, I buy ready to eat grilled chicken salads in advance.

I think that most people who have never been overweight don't find it takes work but they have good habits and make good choices. That's what many of us here on MFP are trying to become. I don't want to pre plan every meal for the rest of my life nor do I want to log every morsel I put in my mouth. But if I spend a couple of years learning about portion size and getting used to eating an appropriate number of calories regularly I will have hopefully developed good habits and will make good choices in the future.
