Unhealthy relationship with food... Learned behaviour?

Just wanted to get people's thoughts on this.

I grew up with my dad away in the navy with my mum always either eating everything in sight or starving herself and she never ate healthily apart from when dad was on leave and cooked. This continued after he left as he still worked away mon-fri. I've never had a healthy relationship with food all the time I lived with mum, following in her footsteps (apart from when I got myself a lovely speed addiction - 7years clean!) when my dad died I piled on 3 stone with the help of my MH medication being changed that I'd been on since getting clean (self medicating).

Over the past 6 months (and living on my own) I've managed to start controlling - and losing - weight the healthy way but I wonder whether my unhealthy habits previously were picked up from watching mums behaviour throughout my life (she's in starvation stage currently).

Sorry this post is kind of long and rambling but I hope it makes sense

I think it's likely, but as an adult you've taken measures to educate yourself and change, which is exactly the right thing to do. We often learn bad habits from our parents, but the blame for continuing, even out of ignorance, rests on our own shoulders.

Very true, I wasn't by any means trying to justify seeing that as an excuse for my unhealthy relationship with food, was rather seeing people's opinions on if that was maybe where it stemmed from :)
