Calvin and Hobbes works for me because Watterson defied our world and it's petty conventions. Calvin is larger than life despite being smaller than Moe. Hobbes is a stuffed tiger but wiser than Yoda. His parents don't even have names... nor do they need names... Calvin's world is the perfect menage of reality and surreal imagination.
You see, I want to believe a desk can turn into a dinosaur and run away... a plastic gun can transmogrify Calvin into a tiger or a worm or an owl. I don't want limits to Calvin's imagination.
Although I understand the desire by many fans to have closure, this account tied Calvin to humanity... limits him to a frail human body... Bringing the loose ends together, so to speak.
I prefer Watterson's ending... heading out in an unknown direction to adventures yet imagined. I prefer Calvin to be immortal with Hobbes forever by his side, gently chiding Calvin for his excesses and relishing his company.5 -

When my son was younger we read C/H together, and now I'm reading them with my daughter. She wanted us
